Urgent: Fatal crashes! Please help
Hello,
after completing nearly all the new levels (I am at 7.5 at the moment), I am encountering random (e.g during levels, in the menus etc.) crashes while playing RTWD. And I mean total crashes: I cannot switch back to any other program or the task-manager using ctrl-alt-del but have to switch off my system and reboot.
My Windows-XP-system is otherwise extremely stable. No crashes whatsoever.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Thank you, Malchus

I'm afraid the only help I can offer is tea and sympathy.
Oh, and you could try running around the room shouting 'Oh my God, oh my God!', that's what I do
I would suggest doing a disk check when you getting running again, but I totally knackered my son's laptop doing that, and lost all his files for college
He got it repaired, they said it was caused by an incompatible memory card so they changed it.

This has happened to me several times also. Any ideas?Milchi wrote: I am encountering random (e.g during levels, in the menus etc.) crashes while playing RTWD. Hi Milchi,
Yep, I had the the game lock-up on me 3/4 times as well.
I use Windows XP
I pressed the Windows key on my keyboard to get back to the desktop, then right clicked on RTW at the bottom of screen to 'Delete'.
I then reloaded RTW and continued OK - at least I didn't have to reboot

Mine has crashed as well, I am able to do a CRTL-ALT-Delete and kill the task however. Than I'm fine to re-start and keep playing. It usually happens when I am switiching back and forth between RTWD and Windows (like to check the forum etc.). Once it happened when I pressed ESC and Restart the level.
I did get a GPF in a file (I'll make note of the file next time although it doesn't happen often.

I've also had this problem several times. I'm running Windows XP, full screen for the game. It also happened after switching between Windows (the discussion board) and the game. Control-Alt-Del worked, but was slow to "step"in and respond. The only message I received was to report this to Microsoft, which I did. I have Norton's firewall.
I'm glad to hear I'm not alone and hope someone can come up with a solution.

Interesting, sounds like I'm the only one who hasn't gotten a single crash since I started playing (but then again, I'm only on World 6 right now, and it sounds like a good number of you are way ahead of me).
One thing I always do is to run it in windowed mode though, sounds like a good number of you run it in Full Screen, maybe switching to Windowed mode would fix things?!?!?
Hopefully Patrick will get to the bottom of this quickly, since it looks like it's affecting quite a number of people.

Eeek... I don't like hearing that. If several of you get this crash, it must be a bug somewhere. Unfortunately I've never experienced a single lockup crash. If folks could post when it happens, that will help me track it down:
1. Try switching to Windowed mode. I see Malc already had a crash, but I would like to know if the # of crashes etc diminishes, to see if that's a possible source.
2. Does the crash ever appear right away, or just after playing for a while... if so, how long after your re-boot (hour, two hours, ....)
3. Does it appear only while playing the game (not in menu, etc)? If so, anything particular happen in common when it crashes? A particular sound effect, a character being killed, etc?
4. Just in case - do make sure that you have the latest directX (www.microsoft.com/directx) installed, and your video-card drivers updated!
Grrrr.
Sniff.
Not to worry though - this should be fixable.

Hi Patrick,
Happened to me say 4 times overall.
Never at the loading or menu point. Maybe after an hour or two.
No particular action in the game that I can remember - in fact in 2 cases I think I was just moving a character around.
I have a NVIDIA Gforce4 MX 440 video card with 64Mb memory.
I use Direct X version 9 - the latest that I am aware of.

I haven't had this happen yet & I always play in full screen. When I am "seriously Wonderlanding," I have the game open in full screen, the editor open in full screen and IE open. At least now I know if it does happen, I won't be totally alarmed!! (Although I'm sure there'll be some swearing coming out of this room!)

Patrick,
I have:
ATI Mobility 128 AGP 4X (laptop)
I do play full screen always have
DirectX 9.0b
I'll pay more attention to when it happens. It has never happend just moving around though. Usually it has been awhile after I started playing and I do switch back and forth between IE and playing. The last time it happend after pushing ESC so I could restart a level. The sound got (what I'll call) 'stuck' and I could do nothing. This use to happen to me in the old version as well, but than it was always when I was switching back and forth. I can always do a t CRTL-ALT-DELETE and kill RTW and than get right back in (no Re-Boot). It has never happened more than once a day so it no big deal to me.
Hope all me rambling helps.
