Hunting Two Bugs

Post by Midnight Synergy » Tue May 18, 2004 9:57 pm

Hi all,

there were two possible bugs with the custom level display that were mentioned before... I'd like to remove them for the next version, but I'm having difficulties reproducing them (if they actually are bugs).

If anyone experienced either of these, could you let me know any info you have on when/how/etc it happened?

1. The "lost scores" bug. Here I'm wondering if you perhaps have several player files running, and might have switched back and forth between player files? Did the scores disappear when you downloaded the full set of customlevels again (and possibly replaced old version in your customlevel directory)?

2. The "crash" bug in displaying the list of customlevels. Someone mentioned that they had a "bad" level which made the whole list not display, and removing the level fixed the problem. Anyone still have an example of such a level on their hard drive?

Thanks for any help. Here's to good huntin'!

Actually, never mind #2 - I think I just found and hopefully removed it.

My scores vanished after moving files from one directory to another. I only have one player file. I was trying to re-organize some of the custom levels after I had played them and when I moved them into a different directory the scores were gone.
I'll try it again and let you know.

OK so now I can move things. I'll play around some more and see if I can figure out what I did last time.

That's my experience, also - when I re-arrange files. However, it doesn't happen every time, and sometimes some scores stay while others disappear.

OK here is what I think, doesn't make much sense but here goes.

The score only seems to vanish when copying (or moving) a level from a directory that contains a large amount of levels.
For example I had not problem moving a file from a directory that only had 3 levels in it, but when I moeved a files from a directory that had 45 levels in it the score was gone. I even copied both levles into the same directory. Very strange.

I don't think I'm going nuts but you never know.

Hope that helps.

And just to double-check: are you copying the files in Windows Explorer?

Any loading/saving in the level-editor? (this will reset the score for that level, but that's intentional)

Player files - you mean just the folder "Players" with the players in it? Nothing else?

Yeah, for now just the *.pla file(s) from your players directory.

Thanks much in advance!

I've moved files from one directory to another and never had a problem losing scores, and I've loaded them in the editor and moved them back again and still not lost scores. I've moved things both in Explorer and My Computer.

The only time I've lost scores is when I've renamed a level e.g. in the Alphabet series where two had the same name, and in the Week in Wonderland where I put numbers in front of the name so they would appear in the right order, but that's because they are treated as new files.

Strange... first Popo then Oldpete appeared in the "Last Post" heading, but there are no posts. Would figure that the bug hunting thread has a bug.

Thanks to Jen and Majic1 - got your player files.

And now popo's post is visible again- weird. Pauline: just loading the level in the editor wouldn't reset the score, but if you save it (even if under the same name) I think it should reset the score to zero - since the editor assumes a changes was made and hence the level could now be more or less difficult than before.

That's exactly what I was trying to say - just moving files shouldn't make scores disappear, only changing something in the file should do that.

I would imagine that if you change a file name, say, that the scores for the oringinal are still in the player file but you can't see them if there isn't a file with a matching name. If you canged the name back I think the scores would reappear. Am I correct?

OK so it happened to me again. In my Carolyn directory I have 54 levels. I did nothing to the directory (no moving copying etc.) All I did was add a new level and half of my scores are gone, not all but close to half. UGH!!! Very frustrtaing as I had solved all but 2 of her levels.

Same thing has happened to me Jen - only in ol'gramma's folder. I had completed all of hers & most of the scores disappeared. VERY frustrating!

Just lost more scores. I saved another level into my Carolyn folder and lost more scores. The weird thing is I lost scores in the middle of my lising near where that level falls. To be more specfic, I save the file WokrkinGhosts.lev and the score on levels near that level alphabetically were lost.
Very weird.

Do you save levels straight to your custom folder when you download them? I save mine in My Documents first and then move them to the Wonderland folder in Explorer, and I've never had a problem. I also make sure there are never too many files in one folder, the most I've got in one folder is 60.

You watch, now I've said that, I'll start having trouble!

No I save direct to custom, It has to be the amount of levels in the directory so I'll keep my eye on that for now on.
