To catch a thief

Is there ANYWAY to do this one, he's in the sewers with the purple shard and I've been trying for nearly 8 hrs and haven't mastered it yet. Does this level have to be done and if not where do I go to next, very frustrated at not being able to proceed, just when I'm enjoying it too

'To catch a thief' is about the indigo shard, but nevermind.....
