Re: ... 2 dwarves, blue and red

Post by Krishiv738 » Sun Aug 11, 2013 8:30 am

Answer

Code: Select all

It's simple :if red dwarf tells yes so blue dwarf should say no,so red dwarf is saying truth and blue dwarf tells lie.if red dwarf says is telling lie so blue dwarf should say no so the key is with red dwarf.
In my comic:the brothers tricked the dwarf to get other dwarf's answer.

Actually, if the red dwarf was lying, than the blue dwarf would have the key, and vice versa. The problem here is that it's impossible to tell who is lying and who's telling the truth.

red dwarf vs blue dwarf

Post by VirtLands » Sun Aug 11, 2013 9:17 pm

We gave each (red vs blue) an equal opportunity to tell the truth.
Each had an opportunity to state their case, and without additional clues
it became impossible to see who's right.

Krishiv's logic assumes that the speaker that speaks first has more veracity, simply for speaking first.
It's simple :
if red dwarf tells yes so blue dwarf should say no,so red dwarf is saying truth and blue dwarf tells lie.
if red dwarf says is telling lie so blue dwarf should say no so the key is with red dwarf.
In my comic:the brothers tricked the dwarf to get other dwarf's answer.

I forgot that the answer i gave had a mistake that if red dwarf lied so it should say no not yes.so blue dwarf said yes.So it means red dwarf has the key.

No, the blue dwarf can still have the key
I'll explain
eg. 1 - Red has key, tells truth
Red: Yes (truth)
Blue: Yes (lie)

eg. 2 - Blue has key, tells truth
Red: Yes (lie)
Blue: Yes (truth)

So it's impossible to know it from that information,
They can both say yes in two scenarios

I made a typo error:
The blue dwarf should say no not yes.

Red dwarf says yes and is telling truth: has key
Blue dwarf says no and is lying: has key

Red dwarf says yes and is lying: doesn't have key
Blue dwarf says no and is telling truth: doesn't have key

They can't both have the key or both not have the key.

I just had an idea and a solution that allows both dwarfs to be telling
the truth at the same time...

Answer to my question(correct this time)

Blue:yes lies:no but says yes
Red:yes truth:has key

Blue:yes truth:has key
Red:yes lies:no but says yes

They both cant have the key so

Blue:Red says:yes(lie)
Red:blue says:yes(truth)

Blue:red says:yes(truth)
Red:blue says:yes(lie)

So

Blue:red says:blue says:no(lie)
Red:blue says:red says:no(truth)

blue:red says:blue says:yes(truth)
Red:blue says:red says:no(lie)

So red has the key!!!!

Here is an impossibly difficult puzzle I wrote on the spot for my little sister:

Grandma, Grandpa, you, me, and your big sister all go to a restaurant and order 3 meals each. How many meals do we order in total?

You and your big sister can only manage 1 1/2 meals. How many meals do we have left over?

To prevent food going to waste, we ring Mum and Dad and ask then to come and finish off the leftovers. When they arrive, they can't find us and order 5 meals for themselves. Eventually, I bump into them and give them our leftovers. How many meals do they have now?

They each only manage to eat 3 meals, so they give the leftovers to me. How many meals am I given?

Shortly after I finish these leftovers, everyone who ate 3 meals or more start to feel sick. How many people are feeling sick?

Each of the people who are feeling sick need 2 toilets each, to empty their stomachs. How many toilets do we need?

The janitors come into the bathrooms to clean the toilets, and realize that several of their toilets are blocked with vomit. They decide to go and buy some toilet-unblocker to clean out the toilets. If each toilet needs 1 1/2 bottles of toilet-unblocker, how many bottles do the janitors need to buy?

Each bottle of toilet-unblocker costs £2 (or $2, in American money). How much money do the janitors need?

Unfortunately, the janitors realize that they only have £22! How much more money do they need?

The janitors decide to go and sell some more meals at the restaurant. If each meal costs £2, how many more meals do they have to sell to reach their target?

It just so happens that Dad is feeling hungry again, so he buys just enough meals to fund the janitor's toilet-unblocking. He can only manages to eat 1 of these meals, so he decides to split the leftovers between you and your big sister. How many meals do you each receive?

AND THEN OUR CAR JOURNEY ENDED, SO I HAD TO STOP.

BUMPER CARS

I think everyone stopped posting on this because they freaked out upon seeing Yot Yot's huge puzzle. I personally don't have the time (even with christmas break) to figure it out, but it'd be a shame to leave this topic to rot. So I've found several puzzles for you guys to figure out in the meantime!

EASY:

1. If you know me then I am nothing, but if you don't, then I am something, what am I?
2. I am lighter than air but a million men cannot lift me up. What am I?
3. What has a head, a tail, is brown, and has no legs?
4. When you have me, you feel like sharing me. But, if you do share me, you don't have me. What am I?
5. You're in a deep, dark jungle. You have a matchstick, a wooden stove, and a lantern. What will you light first?
6. Where can anybody but you sit?

MEDIUM:

1. Remove six letters from this sequence to reveal a familiar English word. BSAINXLEATNTEARS
2. You own a lake where there is a small island. You want to build a house over there and need to carry the required stuff. Sadly, you have no boat, ship, or anything that you can use to transport all the material to the island! What will you do in order to carry the stuff to the island?
3. I have one, you have one.
If you remove the first letter, a bit remains.
If you remove the second, bit still remains.
After much trying, you might be able to remove the third one also, but it remains. It dies hard!
4. After teaching his class all about Roman numerals (X = 10, IX=9 and so on), the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen could not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete. What did the class do?
5. George attends a party where he quickly gulps down a large iced tea before unexpectedly having to rush home. He suffers no ill effects but other people at the party who drink the iced tea become violently sick. Some even die. Why did the other people become sick whereas George didn't?
6. What number comes next in this series? 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211, 13112221

HARD:

1. Ten pirates find a buried treasure of 100 pieces of gold.

The pirates have a strict ranking in their group: Pirate 1 is the lead pirate, Pirate 2 is second-in-command, Pirate 3 is the third most powerful pirate, and so on.

Based on this ranking, the pirates decide on a system to determine how to split up the 100 pieces of gold. The lead pirate (Pirate 1) will propose a way to divy it up. Then all the pirates (including the lead pirate) will vote on that proposal. If 50% or more of the pirates agree on the system, then that is how the gold will be divied up. However, if less than 50% of the pirates vote for the proposal, then the lead pirate will be be killed. The next-most powerful pirate will then become the lead pirate, and they'll restart the process (Pirate 2 will suggest a way to divy up the gold and it will be voted on by the rest of the pirates). This will keep going on until finally a proposal is agreed upon.

All of the pirates are very smart and very greedy. Each pirate will vote against a proposal if they know that they would end up with more gold if that proposal were to fail. A pirate also will never vote for a proposal that gives him 0 pieces of gold.

You are Pirate 1. You must come up with a proposal that will give you as much gold as possible, without getting yourself killed. Keep in mind that the rest of the pirates all know that if your proposal fails, then Pirate 2 will succeed at coming up with a plan that benefits him the most while not getting him killed.

What's your proposal?

2.

There is a prison with 100 prisoners, each in separate cells, which are sealed off, soundproof and windowless. There is a lobby in the prison with a lightbulb in it. Each day, the warden will pick one of the prisoners at random (even if they have been picked before) and take them out to the lobby. The prisoner will have the choice to flip the lightbulb switch if they want. The lightbulb starts in the "off" position.

When a prisoner is brought out to the lobby, he also has the option of saying "Every other prisoner has been brought out to the lobby." If a prisoner chooses to say this and it is true, all the prisoners will go free. However, if a prisoner chooses to say this and it's wrong, all the prisoners will be executed. So a prisoner should only say this if he knows it is true for sure.

Before the first day of this process begins, all the prisoners are allowed to get together to discuss a strategy to eventually save themselves.

What strategy could they use to ensure their eventual salvation?

GOOD LUCK

EASY:

1. If you know me then I am nothing, but if you don't, then I am something, what am I?
Nothing. If you don't know it's nothing, you'll think it's something.
2. I am lighter than air but a million men cannot lift me up. What am I?
A lighter that turns into air. It's kind of hard to lift up air. The fact that it's spelled "than" and not "then" is to mislead readers.
3. What has a head, a tail, is brown, and has no legs?
A hallucination. Or a snake. But I'm thinking the first one.
4. When you have me, you feel like sharing me. But, if you do share me, you don't have me. What am I?
Anything at all, because sharing's for chumps. The answer might be "troubles" or something esoteric like that, though.
5. You're in a deep, dark jungle. You have a matchstick, a wooden stove, and a lantern. What will you light first?
I know this is a trick questiony thing, but I'm going to ignore logic and say you light the matchstick, then use it in conjunction with the lantern and stove to burn the entire jungle to the ground, thus "escaping" from it if you survive the fire.
6. Where can anybody but you sit?
On top of me.
Answers in bold. They're really gooooooooooooooooooooooood

EDIT: And the number at the end of the sequence is... I'll leave that to someone who doesn't already know the solution, actually.
i should change my signature to be rude to people who hate pictures of valves

1. Excellent answer, but not what I was thinking.
2. Wrong.
3. I didn't think of either of those, so technically wrong. Good guesses, though!
4. Well, it is something, but not everything. So wrong, I guess.
5. Somewhere in there you got it right. Of course you light the matchstick first, but it didn't occur to me to burn down the jungle. I wonder why.
6. I was thinking "My lap" but that works just as well, so you got that one right.

EASY:
1. UH, A QUBIT?
2. Air. It's lighter than a feather but it's a mixture of gases and therefore cannot be held.

MEDIUM
1. BSAINXLEATNTEARS - SIXLETTERS = BANANA.
2. Go in the winter. The lake will be frozen over.
3. Habit.
4. Put an S in front of IX.
5. I think I've heard this one but I don't remember..
6: That's the look-and-say sequence. 1113213211.

Easy 4: A secret.

Medium 5: POISONED ICE

Hard 2: Have the lightbulb on if you've never been to the lobby before. Turn it off it you have. When the lightbulb's been on 99 days, if you've never been to the lobby before, you know everyone else has.

2. Excellent response. That is one possible solution, so I'm counting it as correct. I got that one off of a website. The official solution is this:
Make one of the prisoners the "lead" prisoner. This prisoner is the ONLY one who is allowed to turn the light off.

Each time any of the other prisoners goes into the lobby, if the light is off, they will turn the light on, but only if they've never turned it on before. This means that each prisoner will only ever turn the light on once.

Meanwhile, every time the lead prisoner goes into the lobby, he will turn the light off if it's on. He will keep track of the number of times he has turned the light off.

Once the lead prisoner turns off the light for the 99th time, he knows that every other prisoner has turned the light on once (and thus has been in the lobby). At this point, he may say that all the prisoners have been to the lobby, and they will all go free.

LittleZ's easy 3: a coin? Though not all coins are brown...

EDIT: Oh, I got it, the second one HAS to be a shadow!

dig222's riddles:

1) Is this about a board game? I don't know which one...
2) A riddle? A crossword?
4) Fire, but for a moment I seriously contemplated not even mentioning the cliche answer, MNIK's one is much better.
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.
