Super Hard Brain Teaser

Post by Emerald141 » Tue May 12, 2009 10:52 pm

Warning: This may be the single hardest brain teaser of all time.

Stinky, Loof, and Qookie are in a room that contains a box with five hats in it- three blue, two red. Someone flicks off the lights so it is completely dark. Each of the three Stinkers takes a hat from the box and puts it on. When the lights are turned back on, each Stinker can see the other Stinkers' hats but not their own or the ones left in the box. Stinky says he can't work out what color his hat is, and Qookie says she can't work hers out either, at which point Loof says, "I know!" What color is Loof's hat, and how does he know? And by the way- Loof is blindfolded.

This is not a trick question. Can you figure it out?

Stinky's hat is blue, and Qookie's hat is red. Loof knows this because he's friends with both of them.

Okay, I honestly have no clue, but I couldn't help it.

I'm thinking a question like that must have already appeared in some Newletter issue's Peegue's Puzzle Page. These types of puzzles are called induction puzzles and are not uncommon.

Loof knows because Loof is shorter and thinner than Stinky. The hat Loof is wearing is Stinky's and he knows it because it goes over his eyes and makes him blindfolded.

I think I got that one!

@cbloopy: I checked. It was not in the newsletter, but in a puzzle book I got as a gift.
I did change the wording a bit- Stinky, Loof, and Qookie were actually Janet, Jules, and Jim in the original problem.

@jdl: Did I mention something about it not being a trick question?

But seriously, there's a perfectly logical explanation for this. You just need to think really hard.

Ok, I think I've got the answer!

Loof is wearing a blue hat.

This is solved by induction (highlight to read).
If Loof was wearing a red hat, then Stinky could conclude that he must be wearing a blue hat, because if he was wearing a red hat, Qookie would know the colour of her hat. Same with Qookie. Therefore, Loof must be wearing a blue hat!

Could you edit it again so that you need to highlight the answer to read it?
EDIT: Thanks!

You know, if you would have submitted that puzzle to Patrick instead of posting it here, I would bet that it might've made it in the next Peegue's Puzzle Page! :| But now that it's been posted, I dunno.

I'm gonna hunt around and see what brain teasers I can find.
If I submit one and Patrick doesn't like it, I'll just post it here.

Okay, I found another one.
Someone needs to test it first, though... who is willing to?

I have that book that you got the question from! It's called Fantastic Brain Games, right? :D

 Well, there are dozens of puzzle books that feature such a question - in many different editions and languages.
It's almost impossible to find the source of it...

I thought it might be the source because the characters were Janet, Jules and Jim.

I got a response from Patrick saying:
