Canterbury Earthquake

Post by ben-09 » Sat Sep 04, 2010 4:10 am

Last night, at 5 o'clock, a massive earthquake hit Canterbury. I was more scared than I have ever been in my life. The whole of Christchurch had no power and in the morning there was extensive damage to most houses in my street and all of the shops were closed. We had to wait until 1 o'clock today until we finally got power. There have been many aftershocks, but none as bad the the first quake. I'm glad its all over. :)

If so, do you think he would have put a smiley face at the end of his post?

Anyway, I hope everything is alright, Ben. :(

If there's an earthquake so close to you, you have reason to be scared.

I saw it's already on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Canterbury_earthquake It says: 2 seriously injured, no reported deaths.

I also saw (which has nothing to do with this earthquake) that on Google Earth/Maps the runway looks pretty weird. http://maps.google.nl/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=- ... 3&t=h&z=15 :o

Actually, the smiley was about it being over.

BB, if someone of your close friends/family dies, it's not over in a few days.

^_^ Indeed, you never can be sure for 100% but when they say on Wikipedia:
1 death due to heart attack, 2 seriously injured, around 100 total injuries
not talking about missing people, I think we can be pretty sure that except the person who died due to a heart attack, no one died due to the earthquake. Also, if you read a little further on the page, under the header "Relative lack of casualties" it says that, compared to a similar earthquake in Haiti, there are almost no casualties in this earthquake. (Just try to see the bright side :) )

I thought when Ben-09 said "it's", I thought he or she was referring to the earthquake, not that.
