No need to hex edit it...
Just give a shard, a custom texture name. You might have seen in my hub project that I used a black gem
(Link is in my signature, go to page2 and look at the jungle screenshots)

Yes but then it shows up a certain color shard in your bag.

Edit the certain colour with paint.
Just go to the Graphics folder in data and find the one which shows the certain color shards. Edit it with paint

Rainbow shard obtained by hex editing.
The white shard works fine but the rainbow shard appear in your bag like a key.

Sorry!
If I made it like a wop in editor the color will restored to 0.
I think that the white shard can be make.

Curiosity killed the cat again!
I tested them and guess!
It don't teleported me!
After the right combination(the right song played with shards), the items menu closed and nothing happens!

Put any gem in a level.
Open the level with hex editor and change the gem data.
Data0 to 02 and Data1 to 07.
And you'll get the white shard

Here's a white gem wop for simple use. However, they look a bit awkward since you can't see the "stars" on them since they're all white. They work fine, though.
No custom textures are needed.
