OK, I have tried and tried to get back after getting to the stinkers, but no matter what I do I can't find the right places to put the stinkers. I know that the solution is simple, but my simple mind can't figure it out. Please help.

I think what might have happened is that you walked backwards to the beginning of the game (i.e. "west" - or left - of the windmill).
