Hi there,
When you play a level, say, with the timer off....you may get a score of 250. Then...play the same level with the timer on, you will get a higher score because points are added for how quickly you finish. Or say you play a level and don't bother to collect bonus coins or destroy the baddies.....if you play it again and collect some or all bonus coins and kill some or all the baddies you will get a higher score.....hence, "New Record Level"

It is really just a tool to use to play against yourself when you replay a level.
