PLEASE READ - New (temporary?) Registration Procedures

Post by Midnight Synergy » Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:52 pm

Given the sudden influx of automatic spammers, this board will be switched to admin enabled registration.

If you wish to register an account on this forum, your request will be automatically forwarded to us for approval (rather than to the e-mail you provide).

Important: send us an e-mail to midnight@midnightsynergy.com about who you are and that you wish to register (send us your selected username). Unless you also send us this separate e-mail, your account will not be activated.

Account activation will take up to 48 hours, so please be patient with us.

I'm sorry for this extra inconvenience, and I hope this is only a temporary solution.

Isn't their some kinda "security" mod? I'm pretty sure Mqdar would know since he has a phpbb 3 forum.

Jdl: Phpbb3 has lots of new security features (like "How many seconds someone must be at the registration screen to register," which is, really, quite a good feature, I think). It is all very new, and no one has found a way to get spambots in, I think... yet. But this is phpbb2, and you would need a special mod.

MS: I know about that. It doesn't stop spambots from registering though. The member count in this forum has got so ridiculously high from spambots. Do you know any way to get rid of them?

There is already a (fairly buggy) mod on here that disallows people with less than 10 posts to post links. It doesn't help.

How worse are spammers going to get?
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

Yeah, I know this is phpbb 2, but I didn't know if there was a special mod or not. :D As for the count, delete the spam bots instead of banning them (unless that does the same thing  ) and that should do it. But hey, what do I know!

Jdl, do you have idea how many hundreds of spambots are registered on this forum? Did you know that it takes about 10 to 30 seconds to delete just one?

Does this apply to existing members or just for new registration?

(Hope this hasn't been answered somewhere else!)

Thanks, Susan
