Error Message

Post by sfseaman » Sat Apr 16, 2005 2:09 am

OK, so if this has already been asked and answered elsewhere, I apologize. I have a new Windows XP machine. When I try to run custom levels with a custom model that I have downloaded and unzipped, using the built in "zip" folder facility in Windows explorer, I get an error trying when I try to play the level saying that it cannot load the texture in the jpg file and it gives the message "flag 1"

I can play other levels with custom content that I copied from my old machine. I don't have winzip on the new machine (which is what I used on the old machine) so I don't know if that will work ok.

Anybody have similar problems, or know what to do?

Steve, I also use Windows XP and use the built-in "un-zipper", but have not had this problem. However, one thing I would check is whether you are ending up with a folder within a folder. I think that can cause a problem. If that is the case, you will need to get rid of the extra folder(s).

Good luck!

Ditto here..... I've been on XP for quite a bit now, and I also use the
built-in un-zipper with no problems. 'Flag 1' isn't exactly a meaningful
error message. Doesn't help much in troublethooting.

If you still have your old machine, take the files and unzip them there,
then port them back over to your new one.  (kidding)

Sorry, can't help much more on this one Steve.

Try opening rather than saving the zip files, then use the 'extract all files' option from the box at the side. The extraction wizard will open. Then browse to find the custom models folder and click next. The extraction wizard will unzip the file and put it in the custom models folder for you. Easy as pie.

If you'd rather save the file, then right click it and choose 'extract all files' and the same thing will happen. If you don't browse to where you want the folder it will just extract it to the same place the zip file is then you can move it yourself, but then you must make sure there aren't double folders.

Much easier to do it the first way.

If you don't have broadband it can take quite a while to open the file, and it seems like nothing is happening but it is so don't abort the download. :D

I download the zip directly to the CustomModels folder and then click "extract to here". No double folders or any other problems.

Hm. . .

Thanks for the suggestions. It's very odd, because I can see the files, they are in the right place, and I can open the jpg files ok and look at them. I haven't tried opening the 3DS files with Milkshape. I wonder if it is the firewall that has been setup on this machine. When I right click on the files and look at properties, there is a field I haven't seen before listing the files as "blocked". When I change this to "unblocked" I continue to have the problem. If this triggers any thoughts from anyone please let me know.

I haven't downloaded winzip yet, because I am still on the road and don't have access to a high speed connection, so don't know if that will work. My other machine is at home so I can't unzip there and transfer (although I certainly have been thinking about that).

Patrick -- any information on "Flag 1"?

Again, thanks for the suggestions/help, I'd appreciate any additional ideas.

Windows firewall shouldn't cause you problems, I have all mine set on and don't have any trouble.

There is obviously some setting that is stopping you seeing the files. Are you sure you are extracting them, cos you can see what's in the zip files without unzipping them but you can't use them.

EDIT

I have just checked with a zipped file. You get that blocked thingy when you haven't unzipped it. Once unzipped you don't get it.

Flag 1 is just an internal code for the game, of no real importance.

What might be happening, since it only happens with some custom content, is that the images are weird sizes - some video cards don't like non-square and non-power-of-2 textures (i.e. nothing but 64x64, 128x128, 256x256 etc). Try going into the customdirectory that has the level giving you trouble and look at the pics. If they are odd sizes, resize them to one of the above three sizes (don't go larger). That might do the trick.

Also, of course, the usual bit about making sure your video drivers are up to date, you've done a thorough spyware and virus check, yada yada.

Thanks Patrick --

I resized the jpg file to 256 x 256 and it ran fine. I had only tried the models for igloo and spooky tunnel and when I got error messages, I stopped downloading any more. I don't remember which of the old cutsom models I tried, but undoubtedly it had a jpg file that worked better, so I was led to believe it was just new unzips I was having trouble with.

When I get back off the road, I will try updating drivers, etc. to see if the odd size jpg files will work ok. However, your suggestion, clearly hit the problem on the head.
