Memory Access Violation?

Post by Deetster » Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:30 am

I think I may have posted about this a long time ago, but I can't seem to find where I discussed it.

Anytime I begin to load a level that uses chompers in it, or I get to a point in a level where a UFO is about to be destroyed I get kicked off RTW, and I get a message that says "Memory Access Violation"

Maybe it has something to do with my graphics card? Chompers, and the animation of a UFO being destroyed are pretty advanced. Also I don't have a sound card, so maybe something about the chompers "nyah" chomping sound, or the UFO's sound when being destroyed have to do with this phenomenon? Although Z-bots, and Kabooms, being destroyed work fine.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this, or any comments on this issue would be appreciated. I think my levels could use some chomper action, or a puzzle/action level that requires the destruction of UFOs, and I can't get the full experience out of playing other players levels, so it really is upsetting having this issue.

I'm not really sure what causes the MAV's but if it is something to do with the amount of RAM you have then it's easy to up the Virtual Memory.

Go into Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System. Advanced tab on the System Properties box, then under Performance click Settings. On the Advanced tab of the Performance Options box, click Change in the Virtual Memory box.

Normally the paging file size is set to 1.5 times the RAM you have, but you can make it more than this. So to change it check the Custom button and then type in the minimum and maximum file sizes. Make the minimum twice the RAM you have and make the maximum 3 or 4 times the RAM you have and click Set. Then click OK till you exit all the pages.

See how you go with that. You can always go back to the settings you had before if it doesn't work by retracing what you did to change it. Setting it back to System Managed size if that's what you had before.

Hmm, no luck with that. Everytime I went to a level where there are chompers the same message popped up.

I am not sure what it could be Deets! Maybe the spec of your PC isn't good enough? I remember you saying before that it was a bit old I think? If you right click on "My Computer" and then select "Properties" it should tell you the specification of your PC - maybe you could post it in this thread or pm it to me and my husband might be able to tell you if your RAM or memory or your hard drive blah blah blah is able to take the game's engine thingy thongy wotsits! :D

I have to say that the only time I've ever had a MAV is when there are too many things going on in a level. Like too many models or too many coins or too many chompers maybe. And like you, the MAV used to happen when something got killed. I think it may be when the memory on your graphics card gets stretched to the limit, and then blowing something up just sends it over the edge.

There are maximum recommeded amounts for things in levels. I think it's on the Midnight Synergy site in the same place as the editor instructions.

Yeah, well mine can't handle one UFO being destroyed, or one chomper haha.

Bround, please stop reviving month-old threads with no useful information... I had to already delete a whole bunch of your posts.
