New Contest - Levels

Post by Jersey » Sat Aug 21, 2004 2:49 pm

Davimad, Majic and I got to chatting, and I think we've agreed on a new contest.

Anyone who wants to play, will create their own level, using their usual level style. Some people prefer to use boxes, or certain themes like Space or Garden, or regularly feature a favorite baddie etc. when they create levels. Some people only create easy levels, or brain twisters.

Some of these have become familiar to many of the players, so my thought was that we could create one secret level each, upload it in one thread, and then see who can guess which level was created by which player.

All the levels are posted in one thread, we each create a new folder in our CustomLevels folder where we download the contest levels.

Each time we play and complete (or not, as the case may be) a contest level, we make a note (to ourselves) of who we think created it, and when all the levels are done, we post our answers.

Since we don't want this to get too confusing, we will keep this post only for players who want to participate in this contest, and to make suggestions for rules, etc.

Since this is Saturday, August 21 (my time) I will set the dead-line to "sign up" for Saturday, August 28th (next weekend) This gives everyone plenty of time to sign-up to participate.

We aren't posting levels yet, so this will give everyone time to come up with a level they will use. Try not to deviate from your usual style, or else will be impossible for everyone to guess which level belongs to which player.

Once I have all the names of people who want to participate, I will then start gathering the levels via email. (Only the people who are planning on uploading levels for this contest will be "pm'd" with my email.) You will send me the level via that address, and when I have all the levels, I will upload them into the contest thread where everyone can download them at the same time.

Once you have played all the levels, and figured out which belongs to whom, you send me a list, via the same email address. When I have everyone's list, I'll post them.

Whereas with the Picture Me contest, we were concerned with privacy issues, we kept that private by only sending the outside link to the participants, this contest will allow everyone to download the games, and see the results, even if they aren't participating in the contest. No one gets left out. :)

Only those who create a level may guess who the creators are and post their answers. Once the answers are posted, then anyone may comment on the levels.

Sound fair to everyone????

Let me reiterate:

1. Sign up to play in this post before Saturday, August 28 at midnight your time.

2. Create one level using your usual style/playing feature. Davimad pointed out that levels should only be created as Classic or Deluxe, not Advanced, as this would give away several creators.

3. I will post a dead-line for you to send me the level

4. Once all levels have been received, I will post them in one thread

5. You will have a timeframe (to be determined later) in which to play and guess the levels.

6. You will then send me your list identifying each of the levels by the deadline (t.b.d.l.)

7. When I have all the lists, I will figure out who's right and who's not, and post the lists, followed by the correct list.

Any questions or suggestions?

Okay, here are the deadlines.

They are probably longer than necessary, but I'm taking into consideration that Labour Day is coming up, and I know for a fact that the American Wonderlanders (and some Canadians, too) consider this holiday as big, if not bigger than Christmas  , so I don't want to rush anyone.

I'm away for the weekends of both Labour Day, and the 18/19th, which is why I'm setting each leg of the contest for 2 weeks, in case there are others who have plans too.

To sign up for the contest: Saturday, August 28, 2004, midnight your time (I won't check until Sunday, to make sure I don't miss any of the international Wonderlanders.)

To create and send me your level: Saturday, September 11, 2004, midnight your time. Again, I'll check on Sunday. (If anyone has issues with this date, it being an infamous day, please let me know. I have no wish to bring up bad memories.)

To play all the levels, create your list, and send it to me: Saturday, September 25, 2004, midnight. Check time is Sunday.

I will endeavor to post the levels by Monday, September 13th at the latest. You will then have nearly 2 weeks to play each level, and put your list together.

I hope to have the list completed by Monday, September 27th with the winner(s) announced. I will post warnings if I can't make deadlines for whatever reason.

Let the games begin!

This should be a lot of fun Jersey.

Are there any rules regarding size etc?

I am not a regular level maker but, I'M IN!

Thanks for stating everything so clearly, nobody should have any problems following that.

 Well, you know me, blah, blah, blah!

I just wanted to reduce as much confusion as possible, as I may only be in and out briefly until the end of the week, so I didn't want any questions to go unanswered.

I hope this doesn't make more work for me than I anticipated. It looks as though we've found the land, picked the house plans, and our contractor hopes to break ground by Labour Day at the latest. I know there's not much I can do, but I have several mature trees on the lot that I want to save, so I'll want to be on hand to point them out. Worse comes to worse, I'll chain myself to them to make sure they don't get cut down by accident. It would be a little difficult to surf the forum, if I'm twenty feet up a maple!

There is ONE rule that I believe needs to be added: ALL LEVELS MUST BE PLAYABLE AND SOLVEABLE!!!! Which means play your level all the way through a few times before submitting!

 Sorry, forgot to mention the size.

It's a tough one, as some creators are known for the size of the majority of their levels. Some prefer small 14 x 14 levels, while others run them three or four times that size.

Not all machines will run the really big ones, I myself can testify to that, and too, it depends on the amount of features they use. I've had small ones crash my computer because there were too many spikes, static tiles, chompers, fish and weather features.

Let's keep the size to a medium level, say 30 x 30? Or is that too big/too small?

Suggestions, anyone?

Keep in mind, the whole purpose of the contest is to create our usual styles/preferences so that we can see how well we know the other creators. But we still need to consider players, like me, who have only dinosaur computers at their disposals. And, we don't wish to be resposible for the death of someone's computer hamster!

I can't see a reason why everyone, even those who don't want to make a level, can't have a go at guessing. There's no need to email guesses to you, they could do it in the comp thread.

I won't be sending in a level I'm afraid, I go on holiday next Sunday for two weeks so I don't get back until 12 Sep, but I would like to have a guess. :D

One reason is that we would have no idea how many members would be guessing - it could run into the 100's or more. That would make an awful lot of work for Jersey!

How about if we just extend the date for you?? We did that for Malc in the Picture Me Comp when he was on vacation. Besides, we WANT you in the contest!!!

Yes Popo, the dates can easily be changed.

Majic1 is right, we put extensions for Malc and Janet in the last comp.

Jersey has an awful lot on at the moment, I'm sure she wouldn't want a horde of people guessing.

It's difficult enough trying to keep track of scores etc AND do your everyday things like work and family.

So, are you in?????? :?:

SAY YES!

No, sorry, I don't have time to think about a level right now and when I get back from holiday I'll have too much washing and ironing to do. Plus the fact it will take me three weeks to catch up on the forum. Besides you'd guess mine straight away cos I'd have to sneak a model or two into it.

Don't worry, I'll still have fun looking at the levels. And if I don't guess I can't lose, can I.

Of course we can extend the deadlines, silly! We couldn't have a contest without popo! It just wouldn't be the same!

I'm sure there are several players who would like to play, but won't have the time due to vacations and such. (Close your ears, littlejg) School starts in what, 2 more weeks? (Okay, you can open them now, littlejg  ) I was execting people to say that the time frame isn't enough. I can add another week to each of the deadlines after the sign-up.

Three weeks to create a level and send it to me, and three weeks to play and send me your guesses.

That would give us until Sept. 18th to create, and October 2nd to send me your answers.

Sound good to everyone?

Thanks but I haven't got my level making head on at the moment, and I don't want to spend my holiday thinking about it either. I want to spend it lying on the beach with the sea lapping around my feet, and dreaming that I never have to go back to rainy old England. 8) :D :D

Right on there, Majic! :D

This is the NUMBER ONE rule. You must create a level that can be played and completed by at least half of the players. Not all of us playing can complete every level (guilty as charged  ) but it should be playable for the majority.

As I said in the first post
Each time we play and complete (or not, as the case may be) a contest level,
those participating don't have to complete all the levels to guess. I am sure there will be many levels that are beyond my brain power to comprehend, but they should be playable by the majority of people.

If in doubt as to whether or not a level will be too hard, are there any volunteers who will test play a level for me? I will play each level as I get it, and if there is level that I cannot complete, will one of you geniuses out there volunteer to check it out for me? It will be sent through email, and the person testing it will see only the level, not who the creator is.

Levels that cannot be completed by at least 2 volunteers will be rejected, and the creator will be sent a pm indicating that much. You will have the choice to either correct the level, or submit another one.

Just because your level is rejected as unplayable, DOES NOT mean you are kicked out of the contest! I'm not out to hurt anyone's feelings, and only I will know who sent in an unplayable level.

Maybe I shouldn't have volunteered to do this, it's only been 4 hours, and already I'm confused!

Let's change the guessing rules.

1. Only the people who submit a level will be awared the prize (to be determined later).

2. All Wonderlanders are allowed to download the contest levels and guess which belongs to whom. HOWEVER, those who have NOT submitted a level will be asked to wait until all contest players have submitted their guesses.

What I mean is, the players will submit their lists to me as previously stated, and when I have all the lists, I will upload them in a new thread. Once I have uploaded the list, THEN everyone else can place their guesses.

Does that sound good to everyone?

Right again, majic!

We have until midnight (everyone's local times) on Saturday, September 28th to sign up, so he may pop in by then.

This contest is open to all Wonderlanders who have posted at least 10 levels in either Custom and/or Deluxe forums, and have had success with them.

There are a lot of new creators on the board now, so we want to include them, but we also need to take into consideration that we can only guess your style/preferences if we have played more than one or two of your levels. Before I decide what someone's personality is like, I like to meet them several times to get a good judgement of them. Make sense?

Majic is right, LNS! I would be tickled pink to have you help! :D

And, of course you can still play. I'll send you only the levels that I can't complete (because I'm not the brightest light on the Christmas tree  ) but you will only see the level, not who the player is. That way, you can still enjoy the contest.

I will submit a level too, but will not quess, for obvious reasons.

I'm getting a lot of people interested in the contest, so far, I have a definite yes from:

Davimad
Majic1
janetgalle
littlejg
lgrapes (pm)
loof101 (Happy Early Birthday!)

The list is building, but we still need more!

I am working on the rules, with MUCH needed help from Majic and Davimad, so those should be officially posted today or tomorrow at the latest.

We have extended the creation deadlines, and the playing deadlines, as there were several people who were concerned about the time. The new deadlines will be posted along with the rules.

If, for reasons of busy schedules, you think you can't make the creation deadline, I am accepting your levels early. One player has already created a level, and is sending it to me this week. The same holds for the lists, once all the levels have been posted.
