Downloading Zip Files....Help

Post by TASHA » Thu Feb 17, 2005 1:31 am

Joined last August & just love the game!! Have downloaded almost all levels & constantly check for new ones every day -- best money I ever spent. The only problem I have is downloading zip files. I download into either
C:Return to Wonderland/Custom Models or Custom Houses (whichever directions are given) but don't know what file to extract them to. Have tried many different combinations but nothing seems to work When I open RTW Deluxe the menu only gives me 4 choices -- Tutorial, Classic, Deluxe & Classic Levels -- so how can I extract Custom Houses or Models into any of these choices. Could someone please give me the exact route & how I open the files in the game. I sound pretty "stupid" but this is all new to me. Am working on Windows XP. Thanks for you help.

Hi Tasha - Good to hear from you and WELCOME.

It sounds like you're doing everything correctly, as long as you're
extracting the files after you download them. Once extracted, you
don't need to do anything more! The models and houses are "built"
into the levels that use them, and the levels will "look" for them in the
proper directory. (ReturntoWonderland/CustomModels/modelname) where modelname is where the files were extracted to by default.

I hope this helps! If not, let us know. There's always someone here
willing to help.

Hi Tasha,

When you download them, click 'open' rather than 'save', and then extract them to the custommodels or customhouses folder. If you click 'save' and then extract them you sometimes get an extra folder with the model folder inside it, and that stops the models showing up in the level. Clicking 'open' avoids that problem.

Once they are in the right folders there's nothing else to do but play the level, and the models should show up.

The menu only gives you the choices of levels, not the custom content folders.

Let us know if it works. :D

Downloading Zip Files

Post by TASHA » Fri Feb 18, 2005 1:04 am

Hi Roger & Pauline: Many thanks for trying to help me download zip files. For some reason I'm still having a problem -- I seem to be totally drawing a blank & cannot "rest" until the problem is solved. Following is what route I'm following -- perhaps you can tell by that exactly what I'm doing wrong.

I'm trying to download zip file Cleopatras Tomb, file name ohbehave6m. I clicked on download & saved to: C:/Return to Wonderland Deluxe\Custom Models\ohbehave6m. I can then see the zip file in the above location. Then I right clicked on the zip file to "Extract All" & chose the following path: C:\Return to Wonderland Deluxe\Custom Models\ohbehave6m. Don't know whether to use the file name or the name of the level -- i.e. cleopatras tomb or ohbehave6m -- or both. The extraction goes thru but opens the file in the same location as the zip file & doesn't go into the actual game.

It's probably something really stupid that I'm doing wrong, but I think I've tried for so long that now nothing makes sense & I'm tearing my hair out. Would really love you to solve this for me before I look in the mirror & I've gone bald!!!! TASHA

Hi Tasha,

I had this problem ages ago - when I started to download custom models/houses too. JG finally helped me out

You are doing everything right - when you extract the file - just extract it to either the custom models or custom houses (whatever it is) BUT make sure that you have ticks in the boxes named "overwrite existing files" and "use folder names". You can then right click on the zip file and delete it.

Let me know if this works for you.

You're ending up with the double folder issue most likely.

Don't click 'save' or you end up with a folder in a folder. Click 'open' and wait for the page to open. Then right click and select 'exract all'. When the exraction wizard opens click on 'browse' and find your way to C/Return to Wonderland Deluxe/CustomModels. Then click 'next'.

You will then end up with one folder in the CustomModels folder with the same name as the zip file. After you click 'finish' you will be able to see the folder. If you open the folder there should just be files inside, not another folder.

That's all you have to do, don't change any names. The level looks for that folder and uses the files within it.

When you click 'save' and then extract the files, the wizard automatically makes a new folder to put them in. If the files are already in a folder you end up with a folder in a folder, and that is bad.

If you are going to do it the 'save' way, download the zip to My Documents and then extract to the CustomModels folder as I described above.

You can check if you are suffering from the double folder thing by opening the folder in question in the CustomModels folder. If when you open it you see another folder, that's where the problem is.

I hope this explanation isn't too confusing.

What you should get in the end is C/Return to Wonderland Deluxe/CustomModels/obehave6m/various model files

Hi Pauline:

Many thanks for all your tips. Did as you suggested & clicked on "Open" then extracted the folder contents to: C:\Return to Wonderland Deluxe\Custom Models. The file unzipped and when I checked its contents there was no other folder inside just pictures. But I still cannot find the folder within the actual game. When I extract the contents do they automatically go into the Return to Wonderland game?? I have an abundance of folders within the game because of the downloading of various levels but I checked thru everything & "ohbehave6m " (the file I extracted) doesn't appear anywhere. I swear, this is going to be the death of me -- you might have a "dead" Wonderlander.

Thanks again for all your help -- you probably consider me a "blank" at this point in time.

Tasha,

The only place you should see the model folder is in the CustomModels folder. It won't show up in the levels folders.

Once the folder is where it should be it automatically shows up in the game when you play that level. If you play the Cleopatra's Tomb level you should see palm trees. If the model is in the wrong place or in double folders then you would just see black pillars.

If you want to make a level of your own with that model in it you have to press Shift/M while in the editor and type in the name of the folder. Then save it.

You don't need to find the contents within the game. Just run the level and
the models (or houses) will be there when you play it.

Hello Tasha,

I can add my WELCOME too.

I can't help you solve your problem, because I don't really know how I resolved it for myself. I just read as many posts as I could find on the subject and I think I was doing something wrong in the way I was extracting the files in Winzip. I was using the Wizard but went back to the Classic version, and made sure I was extracting all the files.

What I DO know is that not only did I tear all my hair out, I scratched all the skin off my head as well :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
I just couldn't rest until I had it figured out - and it took me days.

My husband was so thankful when I got it done, that is until I went on to the next problem.

But I'll tell you one thing - it's W O N D E R F U L the first time you see some of the special things when you open a level. I know I felt so proud of myself.

Good luck and keep on trying - it will really be worth all the trouble.

It happens when you submit a post and click "Back" in your browser after that.

Unfortunately you can't remove a post unless nobody has replyed yet. If nobody has replyed yet, you find an X button at the top right corner of the text message. :D Use it to delete. *
