Wonderland Adventures for Nintendo Game Boy

Post by cloudrac3r » Fri Feb 05, 2016 8:50 am

One day I was bored, and I know the basics of making Game Boy games (because reasons). I have managed to make a (very very basic) version of Wonderland, which I hope to evolve into Wonderland Adventures.
But then I realised: Since Wonderland is not a free game, is this actually legal?
What am I allowed to do with the finished project and what can't I?
Is this even something people would be interested in playing?
Should I keep making it? Does anyone care about a 25-year-old games system (albeit a very good one)?
Hmm. Please reply, I'm interested to know what people think, and I'm also rather concerned about the legality of continuing with this project. :?

EDIT (22/2/16):
Quick links for people who are new to the thread and just want to play it already without having to scroll through 500 posts to find a link:
Download the latest version: http://cloudrac3r.ddns.net/data/wdla.gb
Updates, old versions, blog posts & things: http://cloudrac3r.ddns.net/wdla/
My website is hosted free, which means that it is not very good. If you can't download the game, please email wonderlandgbbugs@gmail.com ASAP so I can fix it! Thanks!

Hey

Technically it isn't legal AS long as you say who the original creators are. Also I Love Gb, GBC, and GBA!

I believe Patrick said that any fan-made games are alright with him as long as they stay on this website and they do not use any assets of the games.

Thanks for all the replies!
So fan-made games are fine if I don't use the assets from the original game?
So this means that I will have to create the textures myself. But can I make my textures look like the ones from the original game? Or do I have to come up with brand new textures?
I don't know how to make a Game Boy Color palette for it yet, so you'll still be playing in greyscale.
By the way, Game Boy ROMs are distibuted as .gb files which can be loaded into an emulator or a flash cartridge. I have both, so I can test it on real hardware.
If you want to check out my current really derpy and very broken version, let me know :)
Hopefully we can get Patrick to reply, just to confim what I can do.

EDIT:
I've PMed Midnight Synergy. I'm waiting for a response.

You can use the regular textures AS LONG AS you say that they are not yours. Also give credit to the original maker of the WA series

Here's the really derpy version. I'm sharing it anyway becuase it is nothing like Wonderland right now and may be completely buggy. In fact, it is completely buggy. The file is hosted from a device on my own internet - I'm not using a proper hosting company. So if my website goes down, let me know so I can fix it. Anyhow, here's the link. http://cloudrac3r.ddns.net/data/wdla.gb
Need a Game Boy emulator? Use BGB. http://bgb.bircd.org/

It is derpy, but maybe if you can add a star and a gate blocking it, that would work for an alpha test!

The glitch tile that looks like four heads is supposed to be a gate that I never finished adding and the weird square thing is a button which doesn't work. I'll try to get a star working as well! Thanks for the support!

No problem! After you get that, then you could make the levels and the hub!

Trouble is, I'm having problems with my computer and I fear I may have to reinstall the OS. Luckily, I've backed up most of my files, including the source code, but I won't be able to use my computer in the meantime.
I'm posting this from my phone right now. I'll fix my computer, and then I'll work on adding a gate and a star.

If your laptop needs a CD to reset, then I know a way around it! Do a restore! Your PC/Laptop saves resore points, that way you can back up your pc!

try game it's nothing like wonderland.
You should make nds games or 3ds games nds uses 3d but n3ds works better and more.
There something called devkitpro homebrew created.
it's legal.

I know it looks nothing like Wonderland. I'm still learning.
I COULD make an NDS or 3DS game - trouble is, I don't actually own an NDS or a 3DS, so I can't test it.
I'm using GBDK to make the Game Boy version, whoch means I have to write it in C. I'm not very experienced in C. The Game Boy is also a very limited platform, with no support for long or float datatypes, and multiplication and division slow down the game a LOT.
Other than that it's great. If you've tried making games before, you'll know it's difficult. I know my game needs a lot more work. If you'd like to help, design a new Stinky sprite, but it has to fit in 16x16 and you can only use 3 colours: black, dark grey, and light grey. (Pure white is transparent.)
I've tried using devkitpro for Wii games. It's difficult. I don't understand how it works.
Ok, you don't have to like it. I expected some negative feedback. Just remember this is not even in alpha stage.

Haven't checked this one out, but yes, the terms that tyteen linked to still apply. Basically, I'm happy for you guys to play around and do games as long as it's in the spirit of community enhancement.

You could download a DS or 3DS emulator!

First of all, thank you Midnight Synergy!
Fine, I can download an emulator. I don't know if it would run too well on my not-particularly-good PC. Also, it runs Ubuntu Linux.
The only reason I picked the Game Boy as a platform is because I own one, and I have had some experience making games for it in the past.
About the NDS. Is it possible to transfer the games to the actual DS? Do you need a special cartridge? Is there a homebrew thing you install like on the Wii?
Oh, thanks for the Stinky icon! I'll put that in when my computer's fixed.

I do know that there is this special cartrige that you can put as many games on it as you want through USB. Sounds odd, but it is a thing. I had one in second grade that I had all my mario games on.

Thanks for that, StinkyFTW. I own a similar cartridge for my Game Boy that I can put my games on.
Now that I think about it, if I knew more about the DS, and I owned one, Wonderland DS isn't a bad idea. You could have the gameplay on the top screen and your items/menu on the bottom screen! Hmm....
I reinstalled the OS on my PC and the problem still exists! I'll have to roll back through my backups until I get it to work.

Alright! My PC works!! Let's get developing!!!

...tomorrow.
It's 10pm. I'm tired. Like all those wee stinkers.
It'll be a few days before I get an update out. Feel free to design sprites, textures and things. They need to be 16x16, four colours only, and white on sprites is transparent but white floors and walls and things works fine.
I also need to figure out a version numbering system. Do I start at 1.0, or 1.0.0, or 0.0.1.... agh. Confusing.
I'm off to bed. zzzzzZZZzzzzzzzzZZzzz

So that I don't spam this thread with updates, I made a lttle website which contains "blog posts", updates, and old versions, assuming I make another one so that I have an old version. Link: http://cloudrac3r.ddns.net/wdla/
The link to download the game still works, it is http://cloudrac3r.ddns.net/data/wdla.gb
I also made a Gmail account for reporting bugs to: wonderlandgbbugs@gmail.com
I'm still working on buttons, gates, and stars. See ya.

I hope you're not talking about a 3D engine on Game Boy, it wasn't possible until the DS came out (even the GBA couldn't render any 3D graphics) and even then it looked like it it was worse than the N64's engine. AKA what are spheres?

No. Unfortunately, it is literally not possible in the slightest.
Also...

UPDATE!!! Version 0.0.3 "Gates and Buttons" is out!
This version includes:
- A gate
- A button
- A star (which doesn't do anything :( )
- A new Stinky sprite - thanks jdl!
- Weird collision detection for Stinky because he is now wider

It looks and behaves a lot more like Wonderland now. I am happy about that!

Go get it already!! >>> http://cloudrac3r.ddns.net/wdla/ <<<
If you need an emulator, use BGB! (Unless you have a Mac, in which case why are you in the forums for a PC-only game?!) :P
