Naming Levels.

Post by ann3120 » Thu Nov 03, 2005 12:12 am

Lillian - I found the following quote that you made for an un-named level made by one of our clever creators:
It's taken me ages to find this level to comment - sorry!
Just yesterday I commented on another level, and I think it might be a good idea to post it again, in the hopes that more people will read it.
I do have a suggestion to offer, which will make it easier for players to comment on your levels.
If someone plays one of them some time after the original post date - as I do - it's very hard to find them in the index - and even searching on the level's name is usually unsuccessful. This is because you are posting two or more levels in one thread. If you name and post each one separately using the same format as all the other creators "New Level - Name of Level", I think you may get more response.

There have been other levels that I have played recently, and as much as I have enjoyed them, I have been unable to post a comment as I have been unable to find the original thread.

It's a shame for the makers to go to so much work for our enjoyment and not be able to reap the accolades. So, see what you can do, and you'll have more people writing to thank you for your imagination and creativity.
(A couple of edits were made to the above, to protect the identity of the person involved).

It seems that there have been many new levels recently that do not follow the tried and true format of naming. Some of them, as you see them listed in the index, do not even look as though they are a game level to play.

This is not a complaint, but just a reminder that would make it a bit easier for every one to enjoy the gaming and post thanks to the creators.

Annie, you are absolutely right, but there should be no need for you to complain or do reminders, sweetie. It's up to the level makers to follow the rules.

It's all the in the Rules on how a custom level should be posted:
Patrick the 'Last Placed' Great One wrote: (4) How to post/upload custom levels
i) Create your Level and Save it, then visit the Level Exchange.
ii) Go to the appropriate forum, Classic (LEV) or Deluxe (LV5). Don't forget to log in.
iii) Click the "New Topic" button.
iv) As the subject, type "New Level:", followed by the level's name.
v) Type a short description in the main message area.
vi) At the bottom, you'll see "Add an attachment". Click "Browse".
vii) Open the 'Return To Wonderland/Custom Levels' directory.
viii) Find and double click on the level you wish to post.
ix) Click on Add Attachment - the level is added to the bottom of the page.
x) Click on Submit to post the message.
Perhaps it might be best to have this rule posted separately in the Custom Levels forum and made a sticky by Patrick (or Mette if she has the power).

Bear 8)

PS. Want me to do it??? (No one will argue, I'm sure)

While we're talking about Custom Levels. Is anyone else annoyed at the number of posts asking for help on old Custom levels and opening a new thread to do it?

Asking for help on a Custom Level should be asked by posting in the original thread. It shouldn't be left to me, Gen, Liz, et al to go looking for the original post to find it was already answered with a spoiler or hint in there, it should be up to the questioner. Why should I have to do it because the posters are too lazy to do a Search.

Could that be added to the rules??? Who agrees?

BTW. This is actually my biggest bugbear with this board, (especially in the Level Solutions section), people refusing to try to help themselves first. I have been considering quitting my 'helping duties' because of it. (Sorry: Mini rant  )

BTW2. Don't get me wrong; I love to help people out, (you all know that); but it drives me nuts having to answer the same Q. over and over and over. It's worse when it's been answered 5 or more times already.

Bear, I think part of the problem is that some of the posters either aren't aware there is a search engine or have a hard time using it. I don't believe it is the best search engine around.

Today I was looking for a custom level. The level name and the level file name results in "no topic found". I finally found the level when I used all caps.

Amy25 asked for help on RTWD W6L4, she had looked and couldn't find anything. I looked under L6W4 and found her answer. So unless you are used to using a search engine you are likely to be unsuccessful.

Perhap a sticky with a tutorial bringing attention to the search engine and how to use it would be helpful.

I recently joined this forum. Its the first forum or online messageing I have ever done. So, I don't know what "proper etiquette" is.

But, I do agree, the search engine is difficult. The rules don't seem to be the same as other search engines I have used.

When I joined, I read the posts be MS, including the stickies. I found them very helpful. But sometimes, I have found a thread by accident that I wasn't even looking for. A good example was a thread wishing a member a Happy Birthday. I backtracked and eventually found the birthday list thread and added mine.

Sometimes, I have found threads with helpful info by accident and later I can't find them because I don't remember what the topic was or what I was searching for when I found it the first time.

I find it verrry verrry helpful, when the format for lableling topics is followed.

Thanks.

Most of the time I can do the Search engine and find what I need. That last post I made regarding the w6l4, I wouldn't have found it if it hadn't had been for Gen. I do try to look in search before I start a thread on it. I have found lots of my questions have been answered just by doing the search. I know it must get old having to look for the old thread with hints and spoilers on it. I wanted to let you guys know that I for sure appreciate the help. I do agree that the search engine isn't the best that it could be but if I try different wordings, most of the time I find what I'm needing help on.

Again, I really do appreciate the help everyone gives when I do post regarding help.

I think the idea of having a "How to use the search function"-sticky is a very good one. And also making a seperate post on "How to upload custom levels" a sticky. But I also think that we need to be careful not to make too many sticky's. Then noone will read them anyway. Maybe the "How to use the search function" could be part of the "Useful things to know"-sticky?

What do you think?

I have made a "How do you upload custom levels"-sticky in puzzle/action and kids. Let me know if it needs changing :D

Well done Mette - you are such a good little organised helper for Patrick!

You could possibly stress a little more about how to put the name of the level in the new post title? Afterall, this was the problem that started the discussion?
