New Level: Reflecting on Reflectors...

Post by LinkyNStoof » Mon Apr 05, 2004 9:04 pm

After hearing Carolyn and majic1 talked about reflectors in the 3rd chain level thread, I suddenly had an interesting idea and was going to add my part to the chain.

But about halfway through I decided I'm better off expanding it into its own level...so here it is.

I strongly suggest to leave the bonus coins alone on your first try, for the sake of your health and sanity...

LnS

I knew when you came back to level editing, you would produce something special. I still think you had he best Small World level, (no offence to the winners :)).

This level is brilliant. Well done!! :D :D

Couple of things though: I actually managed to do this with only 2 reflectors, but I'm sure you knew that was possible. The timing has to be perfect though.

And talking of timing; the third and fourth bonus coins. Aaaargh!!!!!!

Anyway, here's my best times at the moment:

without bonus coins: 1min 22 secs. :D
with bonus coins: 1 min 51 secs. :D

I love all the levels posted here, but this is the best level posted for ages. (Just my opinion)

You did?!?!?

You're suppose to need 7 reflectors! (On the upside, using 7 reflectors means you don't need perfect timing.)

I'm going to have to try and see how you manage such a feat. I guess you really are a level solver kind of guy...

I think I have an idea what you did, but I still have trouble believing that it's possible...I've yet to see a reflector moving on ice deflect a fireball. I'll have to get back to you later on this.

Yes, I guessed that was the intention looking at the layout.

I actually have been doing it with 3 most of the time, but it can be done with 2, but you do need lots of patience. :)

Oh nevermind, I did it...I accidentally discovered and used that trick when I did RTW W4L3, but didn't realize it would work even if you were pushing the reflector onto ice. Good job for catching that!

We were both posting at the same time. :D

Yes!!! It is possible.

Yes! A reflector can deflect a fireball while moving on ice. Just ask DiscGolfer. :)

and Yes! that's exactly how I did it. :D :D

I'm glad someone else besides OB tried this level, I thought the name of the author alone probably scared everyone away.
Despite what you might think, I don't purposely aim to make hard levels (except maybe the bonus coins), I just always try to create something that's a little different from what's been out there, something I haven't seen before.

I'm not going to explain how OB did it with his shortcut method, you could ask him, it's easy to describe but not so easy to do successfully. Instead I'll give you hints on how to get 7 reflectors out of the "graveyard":

SPOILERS:

The general idea is to try to push out as many of the reflectors that are on the perimeter; to get the ones deep inside the graveyard will require you to fill up some water, so you'd probably end up wasting more reflectors than you'd gain from those. So don't be hesitant about sacrificing the ones deep in the graveyard if they get in the way, but do take care to waste as few reflectors on the perimeter as possible.

Play around with the thing a little. Whenever you're stuck, it's either because there's a reflector blocking the way which you can't push, or because you already stepped off (and destroyed) some square you now need to get onto in order to push a reflector off. In both cases try reordering your moves, and remember that sometimes you want to purposely destroy a square first so you can later push off and sacrifice a reflector's that's getting in the way.

So that you have something to aim for, here's a picture of how it should look like after getting 4 reflectors out. If you're still stuck, the other picture will show you how to get the first 4 reflectors.

End Spoilers

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't avoid any of the levels you put in LNS, thought Diversionary Tactics was a brilliant piece of work.

I try every level that's made, if I can't solve it then I leave it for a while.

I'm a determined so and so, malcdelsol will vouch for that!

Thanks for the help, I have downloaded it but hopefully can do it on my own.

Famous last words! I'll probably end up using the spoiler.

Thanks again LinkyNStoof, you are a scholar and a gentleman. :)

Not sure what makes you say that LNS; I'm totally with Maureen on this one. I looked forward to your next level; I just knew it would be a cracker, and it is. :D

~OB

btw. I should tell people LNS was not kidding about the Bonus Coins, the 3rd and 4th are soooooooo hard to get. You got to move fast, very fast.

LNS,
I like your levels. They are very challenging for me and I usually have to try a few times, quit, then come back and try again after I've had time to think about it. Malc's usually affect me this way too and I love every one of his levels. Please keep them coming. :D

Oh BOY! This is one of THOSE! Typical LNS level we have missed for awhile here! This is going to take me a while to figure out - but I WILL, and I love it! NOW if we could just get LEANDEMON back - he's had some SUPER levels - LNS & LD could have a competition of their own!!!

HELP!

Got the reflectors, blew up the box... .... STUCK!

Now the reflector is in the way, I have done something wrong somewhere.

Am I just too stupid for words????????? :?

Please, please, please give me a hint before I tear my hair out!

This one is really a toughie. Wish I could figure out how to do this like Bear did, with only a couple of reflectors, since I sure am not having much luck getting those reflectors freed up! I'll be working on this one for awhile. Great work, Linky!

Maureen, I partly used the number messages that LNS used to work out this puzzle. That's the main reason i did it with 3 reflectors. It's also what gives the clue to getting rid of the reflector at 2, (marked in the pic with the red 'a').

Anyway, using the diagram below; let's see if I can help

***World's most absurd looking spoiler ahead***

Assuming you have all your reflectors in place and have got rid of the box, you only need to clear the route to the Coins.

Look at where squares b & a are. If you push a reflector from b to a, b replaces a, a will move over the ice and bounce back. lf you follow through and push the reflector that is now at a while the original a is on the ice, they will collide and clear the path to the coins.

Piece of cake!

Thanks OB, I tried that and just got Stinky killed!

I mustn't have been quick enough, I'll go back and try again.

Incidentally, your explanation was perfect. :)

No no, you're doing just fine. 8)

I didn't want to overwhelm you with too many hints the first time around, so that's why I didn't say anything about this the first time I posted hints.

I thought getting the reflectors out of the way is the trickiest part of the level, so I put in some sign posts, but I was the one "too stupid for words" to come up with a good hint, so with the sign posts I just numbered the positions you need to go through to clear the reflectors after blowing up the box.

(Spoilers)

Going through 1-2-3-4 will extract out one of the reflectors you've setup earlier. Then follow what OB said, place the reflector at B ("5") and go through 5-6 to smash that reflector against the one blocking the way.

[/spoiler]

Oh, let me also apologize for any extra cigarettes smoked and any extra hair lost as a result of this level......[sheepish grin]

Thanks LNS, I finally got it!

Must admit to leaving the bonus coins for OB, I am just not quick enough.

Yeah, there was a bit of a cloud round me as I played this level.

You must read every post on the forum, like me. 8)

So, when's the next one coming out????????

cheers and thanks again.

I do too, though I can't say I read all the ones I got backed up on when I was away from Wonderland. I might have missed a few,

Still working on this one LNS. I haven't had a lot of time to play the levels I've downloaded lately, so I haven't gotten the time to really sit down and solve this one. I really am enjoying it though! :D
