New Level - Same Game

Post by LinkyNStoof » Fri Apr 23, 2004 9:38 pm

I actually did not create this level myself.

This level was originally by David Stolp and was for another game, which is more similar to Sokoban than Wonderland. Still, I like the level a lot and manage to (with his permission of course) adapt it into a Wonderland level.

Let me warn you that this level is devilishly  :!: difficult even though it might not look so, and even though no tricky timing's involved. This level will easily make my own levels look like kids levels. Initial successes can be very misleading. It took me nearly 4 days just to figure out how to solve it.

I'm especially curious how long this will keep Old Bear at  , so even though I usually don't do this, I prefer people to only use PM to communicate any hints about this level (you can still post general comments about the level in the forum), at least for a week or so. I'm happy to PM anyone hints or complete walkthroughs as they wish, but do try to make an effort first. I can also PM you David's e-mail address shall you feel the need to praise or curse him as the case may be.

(I'll get back to you when I figure this out in about 4 days??? - more like 4 MONTHS!!!)

Oh Boy! You would post this on a Friday night when I can't get at it. (Friday night is take wife out night :D)

Anyway, as soon as the kids get fed up playing with Daddy, (apparently this is something I'm expected to do at weekends  ), I'll have a look at this.

4 days???!!! Wow! It must be something very special. Can't wait to try it. I'll PM you when I get stuck.

Well, it's only 4.20pm and I have to quit playing as 'she who must be obeyed' has decided that since it's nice weather, we should go out for dinner with the kids. So here's a progress report. :)

I have to say that this is, as LNS said, very tricky. I have been at it now for just over an hour and have got up to the 5th puzzle. :D :D I'm just lucky I guess.

I have PM'd 'the man' with my solutions for the first 4. I'll return to the fray later tonight.

NOW I'm scared!

If Bear is stuggling, perhaps I should just leave this one well enough alone. Wonder if BigZips would have better luck?

I'll go and see if I can make any headway with Salin's levels first...they look easier than this one sounds. (I've been trying his for the last couple of weeks, and no luck...YET!)

Don't worry LNS, I've got it safely tucked in my StinkyNLoof folder waiting for me to get up the nerve to try it. :)

I took a look at this one, messed around with the first puzzle for about 15 minutes and found myself stuck over and over. I'll try again later, but need to go to some levels that I have at least some hope of solving for awhile. May have to put this one into my folder of levels that I'll solve when I get a new brain....but that will have to wait, this weekend I'm getting a new engine for my '77 Monte Carlo and I can only deal with one overhaul at a time! (If only one could order a new brain as easy as a new Chevy long block.)

Hey, I just had a thought -- Bear, what model is your brain? When I get around to ordering my new one, I want the model you have!)

Oh, I got the first puzzle! But then I couldn't get the second one -- just hope I can remember how I did that first one, hope it wasn't merely a never-to-be-repeated fluke!

since it's nice weather
Must be nice, it's snowing and raining here....stupid weather!

Well, the first puzzle had me for about 3 tries, then I fluked out...had to redo it twice more to figure out what I did, but now I'm stuck on that 2nd one.....ggggrrrrrrrr.

You can't solve it the way the 1st was solved 'cause of the conveyor belt. :?
just over an hour and have got up to the 5th puzzle. I'm just lucky I guess.
Can't tell whether you're bragging or not, Bear! Give us hint there, Luv! If I can get the second level, the other 3 should just fall into place...right?!? Bear?

btw - 3 hours and counting

Ha, ha, by now I've got that first one down. I've done it over and over, after screwing up the second one! And, looking ahead, how is this possible? They're all basically the same layout! I keep trying to apply similar principals as the first one to the second one, but that darn conveyor....

OOOHHHHH, I HATE those UFO's! Even when I know they can't actually get Stinky, that shooting at him makes me so nervous, I want to get off that row as quickly as possible!

Bearing in mind that LNS said it took him 4 days, I wouldn't call 80% solved in just over an hour struggling. 8) I reckon it's pretty good going myself.
Dianna wrote:If I can get the second level, the other 3 should just fall into place...right?!?
Wrong!!! LNS does warn that "Initial successes can be very misleading." He is not lying or exaggerating.
Dianna wrote:Give us hint there, Luv!
I can't, it's a Sokoban puzzle; there's only (usually) one way of doing it. Only hint is a full solution to that section. LNS asked us not to do that.
Dianna wrote:Can't tell whether you're bragging or not, Bear!
Not bragging, but certainly feeling chuffed at getting so far, so quickly.

No, Bear, you're misquoting me! I didn't ask for any hints!

What I asked you is -- what model brain do you have?

Actually, I only requested that for now, hints should be given only through private messaging, I didn't say no hints. And although it's kinda hard to give good hints for this kind of puzzle, you can give some general insights coupled with a partial walkthrough of a small section.

If anyone wants some sort of hint, you can PM me (or anyone else as you see fit). I'll try to give something, just barely enough to hopefully get you going just a while longer (you'll still get stuck again eventually though, everyone does).

Well, this is just great! Bear is proving to us what a brain he is today, and I've managed to become "Dunce of the Day" thanks to Carolyn's Badlands level! My brain just seems to be "out to lunch" today. Don't think I'll work on this 'til tomorrow - hopefully, by then I'll have my senses back! :D If not, I, too, would like to know what model brain you have Bear!!

Apologies Dianna (& Jersey). The Ol' Copy 'n' Paste just ain't working today.

Not quite sure what model brain I have, but I can tell you it has a lot less cells since I bought Wonderland and joined this board, that's for sure.

I'm sorry to hear that you're losing cells, Bear. However, isn't it possible you're building new circuitry between the old cells? Gee, that's what I've been counting on, so I can someday do all of those levels in my folder marked "To do when brain works better." (I've been checking on the Web, and replacement brains, when you can get them at all, are rather pricey.)

I think Albert Einstein's brain is still floating in a jar of formaldehyde somewhere. It's probably not for sale though.

Yeah, I read about that in a book called Driving Mr. Albert. Had forgotten all about it, until you reminded me, Linky. If it's not for sale, perhaps it could be liberated in a midnight raid! Do you suppose Einstein was good at Wonderland?

Einstein? Although he was a brain, he had some EXTREMELY weird things about him! Thank GOD he's not alive & participating in this forum. We'd have levels that'd keep us busy for the next 50 years, and we STILL wouldn't have solved them. (Well, except for my DAD and Bear, of course!)

I've been watching this thread anxiously to see if anyone says they've completed this level yet, but no news. Myself, I'm still struggling with the second puzzle, but I'm very stubborn and keep going back to it over and over.

It's driving me crazy how Stinky stands there smiling at me while I'm trying to work out the solution. I can just hear the thoughts running thru his little brain -- "Can't figure it out, can ya? Ha, ha, I know the solution, but I'm not going to show you!

And what about your pic? :?:

You have the invitation so, when are you gonna join?

This is a fabulous level but, I can't get past the second puzzle!

Just have to keep trying. :?

First, great level, LNS! Yes, I know David created it originally, but you did a super job on the Wonderland version. Now.............

Geez!! LNS is right - don't be overly confident with inital success while attempting to solve this level.

I did the first four puzzles relatively quick, but the fifth one - no luck yet.

Now, don't get me wrong, none of the puzzles are simple. And I'm not bragging, I just had some time to sit quietly on Saturday and figure the first four out, but that fifth one..... ***faint muttering of not nice words***
Can you tell that I just failed my daily lunchtime attempt once again? I must walk away without throwing something so I decided to vent here
I know what is wrong, I have an idea of how I want to solve it (wrong approach) and I can't break that mind set. I need to think "outside the box".... so to speak. :)

Glad you brought this puzzle up again, MAD, because I had put it aside for awhile. I can't get past the first part. I even got a hint for the second puzzle, but still can't do it. I had said to L&S that there are only two possible moves there, either the box in front of Stinky or the one to his right, and if I move that box only one space I'm still stuck. He said to try taking a step left after moving that box up one, and to also keep in mind that you could put a box to the right of the conveyor and then push it onto the conveyor later. I've tried to make use of this hint dozens of times, but to no avail. Maybe it will help you.
