New Level (3D) - Island Hopping

Post by sfseaman » Tue Feb 07, 2006 9:51 pm

Another of my attempts to figure out what might make a 3D level have greater appeal.

Hi Steve, I tried this level several times but couldn't make much progress. I just couldn't tell enough about the level to decide how to proceed on the transporters. My attempts ended up way out in left field. It was hard for me to tell where to build the box bridge and I couldn't see what to do beyond that anyway. I think not being able to scan around the level like you can do in normal mode really makes it difficult to solve the 3D level. I got blasted by the cannon too because I couldn't hear it so my timing was off.
I put your level in the editor and took out the 3D and then played it. It still took several tries to solve it because it was such a good puzzle. After I figured it out in normal mode, then I went back and tried the 3D again. It still took several tries going at a slow pace but I was able to finish it.

Thanks for the feedback. As you know, when designing regular levels it takes several levels before you can get the feel for easily a level will play while you are designing it. So far, it seems to be much more difficult to the get the feel for 3D levels. So far we have seen some really nice looking levels with little difficulty, and several levels with more difficulty generally seem to be almost impossible without removing 3D at first.

I appreciate your willingness to try for a while before editing the level and removing the 3D tile, so that you can give me your insights.

I gave it quite a few tries in 3D first too Steve. Then had to take it out. The most annoying thing for me in 3D is that you can't hear anything and even worse, if you try and hold down the shift key to have a look around (as I had to do to see where to push the boxes), it actually moves the character instead  So for me - it was an excellent puzzle in itself without the 3D effect. Sorry

I also haven't been able to complete your space level - this one seemed easy in 3D and I enjoyed the bouncing boulders effect in 3D (although it is quite a nice sound effect in normal view) but I couldn't get the coin infront of the leftside barrel

Thanks for the levels :D

I've been trying this for quite a while now and can't manage it.

The transporter rides are very attractive, but I can't land anywhere useful except on cannon island.

Also I haven't been able to finish the Space Walk level. I could do it all, up to the end when I couldn't move in the right way to get rid of the shadow, so I was unable to exit.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the boxes were for. When I finally worked it out, everything fell into place fairly well...until I got to the boulders. Had to restart, because I rolled them the wrong way. Made it through next time around.

A definite challenge. A gold star was my reward! Thanks!

Will I ever be able to play again?
