How do I get custom textures made without using paint?

The only thing I can use to make a Custom Texture Tile is Paint, because you can shrink the picture down to 64 by 64 which is what you need. But I've seen that almost everyone elses' tiles look more real(without Paint) and I want to know how to make mine look like that.

Do a Google search for: "tiling textures" or "seamless textures".
If you don't have a program that can resize the textures you find, make sure the ones you choose are 64x64 or 128x128.
