Post by dig 222 »

So, a while back a problem came up and I was forced to format
my computer, and I lost most of my stuff.
One of the programs I still haven't re-downloaded yet is WinRAR,
and supposedly a lot of the websites (Including rarlab, apparently.)
that you can download it from contain viruses, anyone know a safe website I can download it from? :P

Yeah, I really recommend getting 7zip. It's better than Winrar in my opinion. :)

Rarlab is safe. There's one WinRar site that does contain malware, but it's not Rarlab.

You can also receive false positives because WinRar's installer is packed and some antivirus software hates that specific kind of packing. That's not a sign of any problems.

7zip is a nice alternative, very slightly slower (AFAIK) but has cool extra features to make up for the insignificant speed loss.
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

I recommend 7-Zip too. It's free and open source. Apparently its compression ratio is better, too.
Also .7z archives can be set to auto extract.

But free > never-ending trial. :P
I guess it's just that I don't like using WinRar because it makes me feel bad whenever the "evaluative pop up" comes out. :(

Unfortunately, the one I got it did end up downloading 1k viruses and 2-3 software planners onto my computer, but...

That happens, sometimes. ,_,
