Showcasing a glitch or I don't know what to call it. Enjoy! :)

Interesting application of this particular bug. Thanks for sharing. :)

I don't think this is a bug somehow. :|

Okay, I'm interessted now - what were your solutions? Maybe this has been around for a long time, but I still think my solution is based on unintuitive behaviour. :?

I'm saying, the fact that 'smart' monsters and NPCs don't go diagonally across barrels, boxes, or water isn't definitely a glitch. It may just be that their path-finding is normally on straight lines and diagonal paths are only used when there is a path from the player or destination facing that one diagonal direction.

Hm, I'd say it is. Pathfinding clearly is able to consider diagonal movement (otherwise critters would rarely ever move diagonally, right?), however only if at least one of the adjecent tiles is walkable, too. In my humble opinion, that doesn't make too much sense, but oh well. At least I didn't miss some obvious unintended solution :) .

Monsters DO know how to navigate through fields of barrels and stuff, but if the path gets too complicated, they can't get through. Maybe it's not a bug, but perhaps more of a limitation.

I don't think it has anything to do with the complexity of the path, it's really just about the diagonal-move thing. The path can be as long and winding as it gets; as long as you can theoretically traverse it only using orthogonal movement, the chomper will find its way.

It can find it's way through some diagonal paths if they don't double back on themselves or anything.

Yup, that's true; that's not "smart" pathfinding anymore, however, but simple "find the closest spot" pathfinding critters use when they don't see a way to reach you. As long as the pythagorean distance to you is smaller than where it currently stands, it works; otherwise it won't.

Silly chompers, being bested by strategic barrel placements!

Very fun little display of their limitations, even after overcoming pathfinding obstacles since the retro days ;)

Made a video solution to this one as well. Hope to eventually try out some of your older stuff again :)

Video boop~
