1 No

2,3 and 4 You're talking about an item. I'm not quite what you mean with that, but I think you mean an object which is to be measured in inches/centimeters and with has a length, height and width. In that case it isn't an item at all. I suppose you'll find it soon now. 8) :D

First, I called the tool an item. But you are now saying it isn't an item? I think a tool may be called an item....but maybe I'm wrong. :?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. You said:
Was the item he tried to steal ......
So I thought you meant with the item, "that" what he was trying to steal. And that is not an item, but the tool is an item. :D And it's hard to say how big that tool is for it has a complete different shape then a cigar box or a computer. 8)

Questions:

1. Was the man married to a woman?
2. Did the man live in the house alone?
3. Was he trying to break into something, to get something else?
4. Was he trying to break into something, to repair something?

1 and 2. It doesn't make any difference if he lived alone or with wife and children.

3 and 4. Don't get too much stuck on that "breaking in". It's breaking in, in a manner of speaking, and of course, he wanted to get something. He wanted to steal something like I said before. And about question 4, in a manner of speaking he tried to repair something, but I'm not sure if this isn't making the story just more difficult. :?

Hint: Think more in the direction of my answer to Muzo's question about a flashlight. 8)

So now we have to guess what happened...... :?

1. Did he try to steal a cookie, from an electric cookie jar, in the middle of the night and he used a flashlight?
2. When he opened the cookie jar, he was electrocuted?

1. Did he trip over an electric wire, that was plugged into the wall?
2. Was he eating a cookie and not looking where he was walking? :D
3. Was he stealing ice cream from the freezer and tripped?
4. Was he walking in his sleep? (or sleep walking)?

Ok, I really think there should be a cookie involved, in some way! If there is no cookie involved......then something is very wrong with this story. I mean.....what is the purpose....without cookies? (or at least one cookie)

5. Did he want something?
6. Was he looking for something?
7. Was he electrocuted by an electric appliance?

Your original question:

A man used the wrong tool to steal, and died.

But sometimes you say he wasn't trying to steal anything. :?

I don't remember saying that. I said "what he tried to steal" was not an item to be measured with cm/inches 8) But he certainly tried to steal!! :D

I see there is some confusion because here in NL the electricity counter and the main fuses are inside the living house near the front door in a so called "counter cabinet" in which are the electricity counter, the gas counter and the water counter. Apparently in US those are outside the house. So some things about this riddle didn't make sense. Sorry for that.

1 Yes, not sure he forgot accidently or on purpose
2 Yes
2 Yes
3 Yes but not like a pliers
4 Yes
:D :D :D :D :D :D

Edit: The tools was sort of wires theirselves 8)

He maybe used that kind of tools but the tool I mean is sort of a wire itself, and it is intended for some kind of electricy, but not this kind. 8)

So Juliet, you have guessed almost the whole story. The man used jumper cables, in Dutch called starter cables, normally used to connect batteries of two different cars. Here is the story:
