Doesn't it snow there? I used to live in Virgina and got snowed in for over a week :) - I don't think we are safe anywhere in God's country, not until we die and go to heaven. But those that believe will be safe enough :D

One interesting thing about getting snowed in for a week is that we usually have a population boom 9 months later. LOL

It all makes sense, I mean what else is there to do when you're stuck inside for a whole week..... Funny, I to wonder how many were named Ivan?

Same thing happened with Charley, Frances and Jeanne. With the 4 hurricanes last year, we can cover names for girls and boys!

Thanks for your concern - we are still high and dry - well, only sort of high, as the elvation here is a lowly 23 feet ! ! ! ! !

I've been following the tracking charts on Emily, and if she continues to follow her present course, the eye should come on land some place in Mexico, south of Brownsville. I know that's very sad news for any inhabitants down there, but it's the best possible scenario for us, because we'll be on the wet side and get a lot of rain, which we desperately need. Of course, that probably means we'll get much too much of a good thing. It never seems to work out just right.

Anyway, we're keeping an eye on the situation, and hopefully she'll give us a miss. Looks as though it's going to be a long hurricane season. It's very early to have had so many named storms, and the sea temperature is hot at 85F, and that just helps the storms intensify. Oh well. North Dakota - here we come

Good Golly - it all sounds so dangy (my new favourite word of the mo  ) dangerous! We are moaning over here because it is too hot and we moan when it is too rainy and cold - we've never had anything like massive hurricanes

Hope you are all OK :P

PS what does dangy mean please?

Nope. haven't got the faintest idea

But - I must ask this question of you, oh Lillie Poo - do you know what a grackle is ? ? ? ? ? (and for those reading this thread long after she's changed her signature icon - yet again - she has a fat turquoise bird that says "I am a grackle"). I know it ain't no grackle, but I wonder what you think a grackle is

I tryed to tell her a grackle was NOT a good bird.

They put there eggs in the nest of other birds.
Like a Robins nest they throw out the Robins eggs.

Not very good birds.

Hi Annie :P A grackle (I think because we were having a laugh about it yesterday on the forum) is a black spooky looking bird with jet black spikey greasy hair - I actually used to wear my hair rather like a grackle when I was a punk (it is stilll a bit like it now in the mornings) :P :P

You are both tight. Grackles are not nice birds. and everybody hates them because there are so many of them - like starlings. They eat all the bird seed and all the little birds go hungry. A good crowd of them, working together, can empty a bird feeder in just a few minutes. However, we've found they don't like saflower seed, and the red cardinals love it.
And yes, they're like the cuckoo in their habits - dropping their young off in unsuspecting nests, and letting other birds raise them, and feed the monsters.

Lillie's hair - no comment :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: A Punk Bavarian Grackle Bird. That must be one for the books.
Bet you looked cute, and maybe you still do in the mornings

You beat me to it, Ann. I was about to explain grackles. They are smaller than crows, by the way, and tend to be very smart. I can't picture Lillian with a grackle cut!

Do you have the Great-tailed Grackles in Virginia? That's what we have here, and they are quite big, and when they walk their tail just about drags the ground. I think we have Boat-tailed as well, which are a bit smaller.

Don't start me on the subject of birds, it's a bit like gardening. I don't know much, but I do love talking about it

Guess I'll just stick to Punk grackle cuts, about which I know nothing.

Ann, get your antenna up ------ they are now saying the Emily may be headed for northern Mexico or southern Texas, near Corpus Christi. That is the 5 day forcast, so you might want to stay alert. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't come your way! But once it gets in the Gulf of Mexico, someone is going to get it. Do keep us informed about your circumstances.

No, Ann. I didn't know there were different varieties. I don't know what variety we have, but they're around the size of a cardinal. The starlings and crows we have are much bigger. They can be quite entertaining when they aren't bullying other birds. I have seen them make the mistake of trying to bully a flock of chickadees. The chickadees mobbed them and sent them packing.

We never planned to live in South TX, and are actually talking about selling our house and doing some travelling in an RV before finding some where else to settle. One reason I don't like the Gulf coast is hurricanes - and now it looks as though we might have one coming our way. What to do? Pack up the computer so that none of my Wonderland stuff gets wet

Actually, we're supposed to leave Sunday to spend a couple of days near Austin to visit with some friends that we haven't seen in many years. They moved from California to St. Simon Island (GA), but are coming to TX to see other friends.
That would be the right direction to go, but they may not be expecting all of us - cat, computers, and anything else I can cram in. We're not exactly prepared. Better talk to the neighbours tomorrow.

Definitely!!!!
Seriously, though, make sure you have all your important programs and files backed up (preferably to a cdrom or dvdrom). If you haven't already done it, fix yourself an emergency box with things like flashlights, batteries, portable radio, water, sterno (or something similar), food (canned and dry, including powdered milk), and anything else you think you might need in case of outages. We've had to use ours several times because of ice storms, hurricanes and nor'easters. I hope you don't need to use one, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
