A real English sea-side holiday - sounds wonderful
Just the thought of it brings back childhood memories

Where are you going, and where do you stay?
Hotel, boarding house, B&B or caravan? We did it all over the years.
The best was when we rented a fisherman's cottage in Cornwall. It was
wonderful for us, as kids. Never realised how much work it still meant for my mother

Have a wonderful, relaxing holiday and let us know all the details when you get back.

Hey Annie - we are staying near Poole in Dorset - gorgeous sandy beaches there (Sandbanks). Stan's father has a caravan and we always have a week somewhere in England in it - the boys love it! There isn't room to swing a cat but we don't care - its cosier that way :P I just hope the weather changes for the better - poor Lizzie is probably getting drenched down in Cornwall this week - bless her :P

I'll bring you back a stick of rock and a "Kiss-me-quick" hat - purple of course

Well - how 'bout that. I was born in Bournemouth, and my Mum lived at Sandbanks when she was little.
I would love to have seen all those places as they were "back then", in their hey-day.

When I was born Bournemouth was in Hampshire, and then they changed the county lines. Very confusing.

I have very vague memories of seeing either the Queen Elizabeth or the Queen Mary in the harbour there. I think it was the Q.E. I have since spent one night on the Q.M. in her dock in Long Beach/Los Angeles. She is now a hotel. Have you seen the new Q.M???

Long may Queen Mo reign.

That's not really what I meant, but it's a good answer. I'll accept it.

You must be able to remember Kiss me quick hats Ann. They were your era after all. :P

Did you go to the seaside when you were a girl in England? You could buy cowboy style hats, black with white fringing, that said 'Kiss me quick' and other things on them.

This is a pic of a modern one.

Thanks Lil - would you believe, I've never heard of a "kiss me quick" hat.
Thanks for the picture, but I much prefer my purple hats

Yes, we always went to the seaside, usually down to Cornwall - we used to rent a fisherman's cottage at Sennen Cove, and yes, I certainly remember sticks of rock with the name Penzance written inside, but we very rarely were allowed to buy all the exciting things in those seaside gift shops. They were probably in there, but alas, I remain uneducated on that particular subject

I can feel my "second childhood" rapidly advancing, so maybe one day I'll get to check them out

OK, Laura - a stick of rock is peppermint candy, a bit like a very large candy cane, but just straight without the hooked end. The candy is hard and when you look at the end of the stick, the name of the town where you buy it (usually a sea-side resort) is printed in the candy. The name runs the whole length of the stick, which is about 1 inch or more across. It's been well over 40 years since I've seen one, so my description (and memory) may not be too good. Some one else should be able to give a better one.

I managed to find a picture of some, but couldn't get it copied, so here is the web site:

http://www.handmadechocolates.co.uk/weddings.php Just scroll down the page a bit until you get to the wedding candy.

As for the "Kiss me Quick" hat. I didn't know what it was either. Go up the page a bit to Popo's post.

Well, Lady Ann of the Purple Hat :D I must say that is the best description & web site of "Stick of Rock" candy. I now am competely educated on Stick of Rock candy & feel I could enlighten someone else who may be in the dark. :D :D
As for the BIG picture of the hat... I must have been reading with my eyes closed  but after the day I had, I think I'd prefer my eyes closed.
Thanks for the educational experiance. :D :D

I'm off to the Land of Nod.......ZZZzzzzzzzzzz

PS. How do you like your title? Lady Ann of the Purple Hat. I think it's a good fit. :D
