My computer died

Post by mette »

Hi all,

My stationary computer died this Sunday. Actually the power supply died and very likely the CPU and RAM went with it. There is a good chance that the harddrives are still intact (the computer wasn't on when it happened). I won't know anything for sure in about a week and then there's the investment in new equipment to deal with after that.

For now I make due with my laptop.

The reason I'm telling you this is that it will most likely influence the next update of my web site. Until I have my stationary PC back up and running I won't know what data I lost and how long time it will take to retrieve. Everything Wonderland related is retrievable, but it's more than likely, that the next update will be delayed.

A smaller detail is that my new almost ready Adventure was on the stationary computer. This means, of course, that I will have to start making a new one from scratch.

Best,
Mette

Thanks Robyn :)

There's nothing I can do at the moment but wait. I sent the computer to a repair shop to get some diagnostics done. I don't want to replace more than I have to, and I don't have the equipment to test motherboard, CPU, RAM etc....

Yikes!

I know how that feels. I had an old HP computer that died, and it was at Comp USA for 3 weeks! It worked, but it was so slow. When I got my current computer (an awesome Dell.) We gave the HP to a friend. Then, it wouldn't even turn on.

So good luck with your new computer. :D

A stationary computer: A big metal box with wires going into it (containing hard drives, CPU etc.), accompanied by a separate computer screen, a separate keybord and mouse. Something you can't easily move around e.g. stationary.

A laptop: Keybord, screen and everything else integrated into one unit. The screen is folded up from the keybord, you turn it on and you're ready to go. Only wire you need is when the battery needs recharging. Easy to move around.

Probably not the best explanation in history, but I hope it clarifies things nonetheless.

Best,
Mette

A stationary computer is simply a computer, BTW. It sounded like mette meant their stationary computer died, but still had their computer left.

Moving that stationary computer around
would be like like pumping iron...

I still haven't heard from the computer shop, so my desktop computer is still not running. This means that the June 2008 update will definitely be delayed

Sorry for any inconvenience :(

Hi all,

I just heard from the computer shop. The power supply and the motherboard are definitely dead, but the CPU and RAM are OK. I still don't know about the hard drives.

Gosh, I miss my desktop.....

TADAH!!!

We finally heard back from the computer shop. The hard drives are fine, so I haven't lost any data :D :D :D

The cost (and trouble) of fixing the old desktop was almost the same as buying a completely new one, so we bought a brand new one that's better than the old one. And since the old one died due to an electrical shortcut, we might get some money from the insurance company.

We're now in the process of moving data from one place to another and since we have about 500 GB it's going to take a little while. And we have a ton of programmes to install. But now there is progress

I expect to update my web site either later today or tomorrow.

Yipppppieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Did ya think of maybe putting your old drives in the new puter? It'll sure make data transfer quicker. Although if your new puter has Vista on it the unzipping is a HUGE problem. Many of the tech forums have said things like "painfully slow" "not worth waiting for" "unbearable" If that's the case be sure to download and install some type of zipping program before ya start.

Something like WinZip or StuffIt. The free or shareware versions work well.

Have fun with your new puter sweetie!

I'm glad you got it up and running!

THANKS so much for making it possible from your website to quickly catch up on all the levels, etc. I've been away long enough that there were PAGES that needed to be downloaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
