i realise for some levels you need to download and unzip custom textures, but i'm afraid "download to custom textures and unzip there" doesn't quite explain it for me.
i have winzip, but i'm a bit worried about messing about in folders unless i know exactly what i'm doing, due to long (and costly) experience of going wrong!
sorry if this has been explained in detail before, but i have searched for it without much luck. the threads i've found are more about problems experienced, not so much about exactly how you download and unzip in the first place.
Hi Dunc. I'll try and help. When you click on the download paperclip for levels/backgrounds/textures etc. , it should open up a dialog box saying open, save, or cancel. I always click save. When it goes to the next box, you need to go in to your Return to Wonderland folder, find the appropiate folder, textures/models etc., and click open/save. That will put it in the folder it needs to be in. When the level makers post a level that has extras, there should be a description above the extra that says what folder to put it in. After you have saved it to the folder. I always open it up, unzip it. After you unzip it, you will have the zipped folder and the unzipped folder. Open the unzipped folder, take the folder inside of that and I move it to my desktop. I then delete the first folder that was zipped and the unzipped folder. After that's done, I just move the folder I put on my desktop back in to the open textures folder, if that's what I'm working in.
When you save it and then unzip the folder, it has a tendency to create a second folder within the other folder. That's why you have to check the folders to have only one folder in your textures folder.
Does any of that help? If not, maybe someone else will be able to help you further. Just let us know!
If you want to be somebody, if you want to go somewhere, you have to wake up and pay attention.
i've done one and had no problems at all. one last thing, is it wise to shut down the game while you're downloading new levels and/or textures, or doesn't it matter? i've always shut down so far, just in case!
Sometimes if I shut down to check something, I get an error message, so I always shut down the game. It doesn't hurt the game any so go with what works for you! Glad it all made sense to you!

You shouldn't have to shut down the game while downloading things into your folders. When I make textures I have the game open so I can see what they look like, and I'm forever chopping and changing them about without any problems.
Well done Amy - excellent help you gave out! Just one thing about the double folders - if you read this thread Dunc, there is a picture of Winzip where a couple of squares are ticked to solve the double folders thing. I had so much trouble with double folders when I first started downloading custom stuff - JG was most helpful and we solved the double folders this way. You shouldn't have to delete any folders if you tick these boxes
I don't ever click save. I always click Open. Then it opens winzip for me. I extract to the folder the level maker said to (using Lillie's helpful check boxes) and then close winzip.
It saves me the hassle of having to take the extra steps of opening windows explorer, finding the folder, finding the zip, and then opening the zip.
Also, most version of winzip will remember the last folder you unzipped to, so once you've put something in custom textures using this method, it will automatically go to Textures again. You only have to change the destination if you're going to models or backgrounds.
I would like to ask everyone with Winzip, why? That is, why do you use Winzip when there is a perfectly good zip tool in Windows? Just curious as to why you chose it over Windows.
I was always a bit too scared to do it that way Loirae - but since you mentioned it to me last time, that is how I do it now!
Poops - we only have Windows 2000 - I don't think there is an extraction tool in there? I do have WINRAR too - but I don't use that unless I download a .rar file
I don't know what it's called, but if you didn't have Winzip it would automatically come up when you tried to unzip something or clicked on 'send to > compressed folder' in the right click menu. I've never used anything else so I can't tell you where to find it, it's just there.
It doesn't matter which you use, but I sometimes get the impression that if you say unzip with Winzip people will get the idea that they have to have Winzip in order to unzip things, or zip them, and that's not the case.
thanks again guys, so far i haven't had any problems.
and popo, thanks for letting me know you don't have to shut the game down, i've tried it and it works fine.
oh, and, er, i haven't got winzip after all! that must be on the other computer with win98, i'm using XP on this one and i do indeed use the built in unzipper, if that's what you call it
i suppose it shows how often i've unzipped files
a person who never made a mistake never made anything!
