No, it's not. Hint: it's not 1.

As for your puzzle, the answer is obviously that one of the queens is actually a queen bee.

Okay, here's a hint: it's not 1
Are you sure? My guesses now are that it's 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc. but for some reason, none of those feel right.

And Jutomi, you really have me stumped. :(

EDIT: SS01 posted as I was writing this post. I think he's right.

THE ANSWER IS 2. Mind boggling!!!
Sorry, I couldn't resist becoming Captain Obvious
But seriously, Jutomi, if the queens are of different colours, does it mean white can't capture white etc?

They probably could, but I decided to splatter paint all over them at the last minute any how before delivering them to the person playing this silly match.

Or an unfair one. Can you PM me the answer, just so I can see if it makes sense or not?

I must say that I'm quite stumped by this. Can you give me a hint? Are there perhaps 2 teams of queens, and each team's queen cannot attack one of its own (eg a black queen cannot eliminate other black queens, with this rule also applying to white)

EDIT: Or what if it's a play on words, and 1 queen is not on the chessboard?

Well, you could work off of that, if you like.

Which one? The 2 teams or the word play?

You could work off of either one...
but the word of play may make you a fair bit ahead in this situation.

when I noticed that there was this 8 queens on an 8x8 chess board thang.

Well, you know how to do that.
What if you had nine queens in a game of chess that could not eliminate an other queen without cheating?

And, nope, there are no other pieces on the board.

feel free to use the quote button to use this as a chess board!

o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o

Please use some obviously different looking thing for the queens - I'd recommend either using "X", "Ø", or "¶".
Ok. This is my attempt at solving this puzzle.
1. Jutomi only said that there were nine queens in a game of chess. He did not say that all the queens had to be on the chessboard. So my first guess is that there are 8 queens on the board, and the 9th queen is off the board, in which the solution with 8 queens would follow (I don't think I have to copy it here, everyone knows?), with the last queen off the board.
2. What if there are 2 teams, where a queen from each team cannot attack its own? (If this is the case, then the placement could be haphazard:
B o o o o o o o
o o W o o o o o
o o o o o o B o
o B o o o B o o
o o o o B o o o
o o W o o o o o
o o o W o o o o
o o W o o o o o

B cannot attack B, and W cannot attack W. This solution, however, alters the puzzle, so I think that the first one is more likely.

Well, I did mention that I splattered them all with paint.

Though, I suppose it was my fault for not implying that in the first place...

As for the "off the board" thing, you're pretty close!

However, could you tell me how this queen could be off of the board, and yet still in the game?

The off the board one was because "in the game" meant that 9 queens exist in this puzzle. The queens could have be captured/eliminated previously, or simply not put on the chessboard.

I don't know, to me it sounds like they were knocked out of the game at that point, or never joined the game to begin with. :|
Though, at least you could say they were all in one game...

So, those are great answers; but what about the "I don't believe you could have 10+ queens" part? :)

I could see that if you had some sort of newfangled invention, you could potentially have more queens, but I highly doubt that it's possible as of the time of this posting.

think about the definition of the queens. maybe it, like, changes between the 9 queens.

Queen bees, actual queens, chess queens, etc. could ALL be on the board.

Posted: Sun Jan 12, 2014 8:37 pm
by Jutomi
Well, I wouldn't say that queen bees would really actually be in a game of chess.

At least, not in this current day and age.

But you guys are like inches away from the mile-long answer.

Actual queens are the ones PLAYING chess?

Yes!!!

Well, one queen.
Technically, 2+ queens couldn't be playing chess with each other because if they got mad during the game, they could pretty much terminate each other. :|

But yes, you win! :D

You know, like one queen human would throw a rock at an other queen human, and she'd be unconscious.

If she's unconscious for the rest of her life, she's out of the game. :|
