I've read several 3d model tutorials, but I'm still confused what to do.

Question 2: When you download a model on a website, you only get a 3ds. file. But in the model tutorial on the midnight synergy website, it says you need a jpg. picture. where do you get a picture?

You know what, I'm still kind of confused too.

PS If you use milkshape it always puts things on its side

With any color maker. As in MS paint (In your start menu->all programs->acsessorys->paint). Then go to image->attributes and set both to 256*256.
That will do it

<edit> Then click your color at the bottem and PAINT!

But you need the *.3DS file to be named model1 model2 model3 or model4

Same with the *.JPEG/*JPG/*.JFIF/*.JPIEG

How do you make a 3ds. file?
