Sewers - gate and last stinker

I got all the other rooms, but not that last stinker. I have 17 stars. The gate says I need 14 (I think). But it won't open. Do you HAVE to get that last stinker before going through the gate too?
If I have to get that stinker, is there anything else (adventures/rooms) I can do if I go back to wondertown? I don't think that last stinker is going to happen for many months, if ever, for me. I had to control-F9 about 1/4 of the adventures in the other games because they required too exact of timing and coordination, which I can't always do because of brain damage. But I still had fun playing the ones I could do.
