okay nevermind, I think I figure out what I did wrong.
In milkshape under "materials" I need to properly set the color/lighting settings "ambient", "specular", "diffuse", etc. I learned this after I found a model of a pumpkin that already has color and stuff w/o using any skins whatsoever. In fact, by using those settings properly, apparently you can create a useable model without using any skins at all (but of course, without skins the model will have a "plasticky" look and lack textures, but hey it's a start!).
With this new knowledge, hopefully I'll have the statue of liberty (and a few other stuff I snarfed from the 'net) ready to post by the end of today.
