A plea for help

Hi all levelmakers,

When I'm maintaining my web site I handle quite a lot of files. Keeping track of everything takes some organization, and this is where I would like your help, please. All I would like you to do is to make sure that the filename you use has not previously been used (e.g. a filename like '07.lv6' is not a good one). This is especially important with the kids levels since levels from different creators end up in the same folder. It is of course also important that you do not use the same filename twice for puzzle/action levels.

If you use a previously used filename, the old level will be overwritten, and I for one think that's a shame. I suggest that you use your usename (or part of it) in the filename - that way every level will have a unique filename and nothing will get deleted. A lot of the levelmakers already use this method and I'm very thankful for it, and this post is of course not directed at them.

Lately I have had to do a lot of renaming of files to avoid deleting old levels, and it's just too much work for one person. So please, help me with this.

Thanks,
Mette

Hey Mette you work so hard on this I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your site.

I don't make levels but I have a question. I like that level makers use their name and a number but there are some that have used titles that have been used before. Do you mean that or just the level name itself? Why I ask is cuz if I come to this forum and do a search for something like "castaway" it comes up with many levels. Which is ok cuz a lot of times I've missed a level or something and then I can catch it. But, does that matter with organizing your site?

Hi Robyn,

The title of the level doesn't matter in regards to organizing for my web site. It's only the filename that's important (the one you type when you save the level in the editor and the one you need to locate on your computer when uploading it to the forum).

Best,
Mette

The next version of the WA Editor will actually automate this a little, which should make your life a little easier (at least for WA custom adventures).

Hi Mette, :D

I think some of my Kids levels may have been goofed up, but I eventually corrected them. I make Big Kids levels and then Little Kids levels, in the kids level topic. I hope these aren't the ones you've had problems with! Please let me know and I will change the way I'm doing them, so it doesn't happen again. :?

Thanks Dizzy :D

But as I recall your levels always have "dizzy" in the filename and I don't think I ever have had any problems with your levels wanting to overwrite other levels. So you're doing it just perfect

Best,
Mette
