I was thinking with portals...

Post by Muzozavr » Mon Mar 09, 2009 7:38 am

This is for Portal fans. Some silly thoughts:

1. What happens when an object is halfway through a portal and you cut the object?
2. What happens if you put a metal bar between two portals on the walls and then weld the ends together?
3. Put two portals on the floor near each other -- stand on the bottom of your feet.
4. If you put two portals on the wall next to each other, could you shake your own hand?
5. We all know that if a portal gets erased when you're halfway through, the game ejects you because Valve didn't want players to be afraid of using portals, but what about IRL? I'd say that anything that had this unfortunate fate would be sliced cleanly, regardless of what it is.
6. What would happen if you touched the operational end of the device?
7. What would happen if you submerged the device in liquid -- even partially?
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

There's also a 2D flash version of Portal here. It's really interesting.

About 7: bad question, sorry.
As I've found out, NOTHING seems to happen when you submerge the device in liquid. There are a few levels wehre you can fall in the acid, and while still there, portal out to safety. The acid doesn't even try to flow OUT through the portal.

Here's a question then:

Why doesn't liquid flow through the portal? Logically, water flows downwards or into an opening. So why doesn't it flow?

Actually, no, I haven't played Portal before, so...

I know it plays like an FPS, but isn't it more of a puzzle game? You have to be thinking with portals

It isn't a fighter game, it isn't even a FPS.

You have a gun, which shoots portals. Walk through one, out the other. There aren't even any enemies, except for turrets later in the game, and the final boss. The main challenge is to figure out how to move around the level layout.

And, maybe this liquid is magnetic and held by magnets...

Well, FPS generally refers to games played from a first-person perspective, so in that theory we could refer to Portal as a first-person game, but not a first-person shooter.

There aren't even any other people in the game.

OK, another question?
What happens if you try to shoot someone with a portal gun?

Double-post, but is it possible to buy Portal seperate from the other stuff in The Orange Box?

I want to play it, but the other games make The Orange Box get an M rating... :?

If you can buy stuff online (and I can't do it due to the hassles of "Svedbanka" or at least I'm not going to *experiment*) you can get it from:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/400/

In non-online stores, as far as I know, you can only buy The Orange Box as a complete pack.

In theory, wouldn't this attached picture be a paradox with or without portals?

This was taken in Portal: The First Slice (haven't gotten full version... yet).

I'm trying to drop the cube through the portal, as you can see, but it's getting stuck on something... Itself

Sorry for the big image

Were you using the "never bump portals" cheat to overlap portals?
Or they don't overlap? Sorry, the pic is unclear.

No, I wasn't using any cheat codes.

I was just messing around with portals and cubes in the Demo, e.g. dropping the cube thru a portal so it landed behind me, and I tried giong thru the portal while holding the cube when it hit against itself and got stuck.

Also, I got Portal on PC for 10 dollars at Future Shop. Can't wait to play it, once I have enough disk space
