New model - Various size floors

Post by popo » Fri Aug 13, 2004 7:50 pm

I don't want to upstage LinkyNStoof, but while we're all waiting for the program that let's us all make our own floors, I thought I'd make a few different sizes. At Janetgalle's request, there are some really tiny ones.

The pack contains:-
1x1 - two types
2x2
3x3
4x4
5x5
no 6x6 cos you already have one
7x7
8x8
9x9
10x10
A template to put you own pictures on

If that's not enough, let me know.

BTW I have not tested them with pictures on, just with the template.

No problem at all! It works out great for me too since I was actually more interested in getting done first the program that solves the reverse-vertices problem. Don't worry, I'll still be doing the program for making your own floors.

Actually, a somewhat more ambitious project I had considered even before recently was to write a program to make it a little easier to merge models together, by presenting an interface that looks and functions kinda like the level editor, but for placement of custom models that will end up being merged together into one. This is rather ambitious though so I don't want to promise anything at this point.

I've not had any problems merging models. I've done it several times now, though I haven't posted any.

Do you mean a program that will allow anyone to merge models, even if they don't have a modellling program, so that they can merge two models that have been posted separately? If so that would be a great idea. :D

Sorry, it don't go that far.

Just to show some of the merging I've done, here is a table with a loaf, a bottle of milk, a pineapple and an Edam cheese. They were all separate originally, and they could be taken apart again by anyone with a modelling program, as all the objects are listed separately.

Yep, that's the exact idea.

The idea is to make it easy for anyone to exceed the build-in limit of 4 different models per level. As such the program, when and if it gets done, will look more like the level editor than your typical 3D modeling program. In particular, it probably won't be able to do things like making your lovely lunch table, where you have to worry about things like moving the cheese so it sits on the tabletop instead of in mid-air or the floor. Those kinds of things require 3D manipulation, which belongs to a proper 3D modeling program.

I probably won't be working on this though until I finish the other stuff first like the custom floor maker or the reversed vertices fixer.

Thanks Pauline! These are going to be fun to fool around with - can't wait to try them out!!! :D I love all this new stuff you're coming up with - just got Photo Shop from my son, and I downloaded Milkshape - I want to learn this stuff. MAN - until you know what you're doing, it's a NIGHTMARE isn't it?? HA HA HA I thought I was so smart - what a joke - working with these two programs - HA - thank goodness I have someone to show me!!!

It does look mind boggling at first, but you soon get used to it. One thing that still bugs me about Milkshape is it's tendency to freeze if overloaded, and then crash so you lose all your work. Just remember to keep saving, then at least you'll have something to go back to.

I really ought to get a better paint program, all I have is Paint that comes with Windows, and a very old photo package that I got with my first computer which was Win98. I was thinking of getting Paintshop Pro. Any suggestions?

LNS, I hope you manage to get the programs going, they would be a real bonus.

I have both Adobe Photo Shop and Jasc Paint Shop Pro. Personally I prefer Paint Shop Pro. ( They are coming out with a new updated version, which you can now pre-order) I do alot of digital photo editing at home and alot of scanning and image manipulation at work, Jasc and I seem to get on pretty well.

Right, I've sent for Paint Shop Pro 8.10 from Amazon.

I tried to dowload the trial version from Jasc but it takes 4 hours on my snail powered internet, and I get cut off after two hours. I can get straight back on but the download starts from scratch.

It looks like the best package for what I'm wanting to do. :D

You won't be dissappointed Pauline.

It has a very easy learning curve & has enough features to keep you going for a long time & considering what you are doing, something like Photoshop (as good as it is - and I have both) would probably be overkill

It's hard to imagine you've done so much with just Paint. You know of course now we're all going to be expecting even bigger things from you...

You do know it's going to be a complete anti-climax when it finally arrives, don't you? I can just hear all the mumbling.....'uh, is that it? Is that what we've been waiting for?'

BTW I haven't just been using Paint, I have Adobe PhotoDeluxe too, but it's a very old program and doesn't run very well on XP. But that's what I used to make the houses. But I'm wanting to make some texture maps for some models, and Paint is really naff at making things look real, and there aren't enough brush options. So it was time to upgrade. I have to admit though that it's the most expensive program I've ever bought, so it had better be good.

First read the readme file. You use them the same way you use Robbies Intro.
You copy the template into your paint/photo program. Put whatever picture you want on it. Rename it model1. If you make another, name it model2, and so on. Each model has to have a matching 3ds. (In this case the 3ds for the 1X1 floor, renamed to model1.3ds, model2.3ds etc.) Copy the models, 3ds, and the template into a new folder, name it what ever you want, put this folder into your CustomModels folder...and away you go!

As an example, this is what the folder looks like for the Ladybug level I made. I used the 1X1 floor.

Hope this helps you out.

jg

Oh Yeah....then zip it up and post it with your level! :D

My Paint Shop Pro has arrived and I've installed it and had a play with it. I can't make head nor tail of it. :? The user guide will take me ten years to read, it's an inch thick.

I've downloaded the extra picture tubes but I haven't got any with fish on and the program mentions fish. Where are they? Also when you use picture tubes how do you only get the bits you want? Like for instance the alphabet blocks. If I wanted to spell something out how do I get just the blocks I need?

I've also had a go at painting. I'm trying to make a texture map for a horse, so I loaded the wireframe jpg and tried to apply colour to it. The body came out ok but I will have to make my own brush tip for the mane and tail. I wasn't very successful at that.

I suppose I will get the hang of it, by the time I'm a hundred.

BTW jg, where did you get your Beatles hair cuts from? Are there more things for me to download, or would I have to buy them?

Have fun with your new toy. Yes it does look intimidting but it's always best to jump right in and learn as you go. (isn't it?)

Some of the tubes are just a few different pictures (ie...not the whole alphabet) with those you pretty much have to select the style you want and then edit it with the letter you want. (There is also some place you can create your own picture tubes, but I have never done that.)

Practice makes perfect!

Some I have downloaded some I have bought. But the haircut is under preset shapes, not tubes. (Again look for my PM)

Don't worry, you'll get it!

The layout of my Paint Shop Pro isn't exactly like your pics, but if I browse Preset Shapes I don't have many and the Beatles haircut isn't amongst them. I think you must have got it with the extras. I don't know where to get extra preset shapes from.

I have signed up for the Newsletter but it said they only send them to USA and Canada currently!?! :? I've looked through the archived ones and downloaded the tubes I hadn't already got. I still can't find any fish even though the user guide shows a picture of them and says you can fill an aquarium with them. I'd probably never use them but my motto is 'if it's supposed to be there, I want it' whether it's any use or not.
