Which is exactly the problem here.
Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure (and by extension, Colors DS and Sonic 4) aren't momentum-based, but rather reflex-based. They're focused on raw speed as opposed to the platforming style of the originals.
In the case of Rush, Rush Adventure, and Colors DS, that's to be expected. With Sonic 4, Sega promised time and time again that it wouldn't be another Sonic Rush-styled game, and in the end, that's exactly what we got.
Also, as for Sonic Colors, the DS is incapable of properly rendering anything similar to Unleashed's gameplay in 3D, so instead, Colors was made in the style of the Rush games. The Wii version is far closer to Sonic Unleashed's gameplay.
