Editor for .lev levels

Post by MsHollyBelle » Wed Oct 25, 2006 10:12 am

How or where can I find an editor for .lev levels that also ouputs .lev files.

I like to play around and fix minor little problems that I find every now and then. Using the 2.0 or the 3.0 editors that come with Return to Wonderland Platinum on a .lev level results in some hilarious nonplayable output. Like lots of Ufo's and very mad mean mother ships !

I purchased the bundle of Wonderland, Secret Worlds and Return to Wonderland Platinium. If the .lev editor is buried in there somewhere I would be happy.....

Hi there,
both the 2.0 and 3.0 RTW can read the .lev files, however they output as .lv5 and .lv6. Changing the extension in windows will force those errors you mentioned. However, I'm not sure why you need to output in .lev? The .lv5/.lv6 can be played with your current RTW version.

Somewhere, I can't find exactly where now, I downloaded KENTUCKY.LEV by Carolyn. Searching now, I find that an updated fixed level was loaded later on. Nice, easy level for a beginner. Thanks, Carolyn !

Anyway, I thought I would have fun fixing the .lev for myself. Just a matter of learning how to change one tile ! I did. But the platinum Wonderland fixed it even more. Now I had lots and lots and LOTS of UfOs running amok ! And a mother ship just waiting to hatch more of them !!!

That is why I wouldlike to have a .lev editor. Just for the simple task of editing a .lev file and outputting a .lev file. No need for a fancier .lv5 or .lv6 version in this simple exercize.

Try editing KENTUCKY.lev file yourselves ! You might have fun dealing with all those UFOs, I laughed and then cried.

So where do I find a .lev editor to simply fix, modify the .lev files. There are other files where a minor fix would make them playable or allow the levels to be finished ... just for the fun of it. Wonderland is a game for fun.

You don't have to create levels with Deluxe or platinum stuff.
The both editors will have all 'classic' things as well as their own stuff

I know why you have UFO's and motherships all over the place after editing a .lev in the deluxe/platinum editor ;)

For some reason all fish turn into UFO-motherships :!:   . So if you don't want that: 1) Edit the level and save it 2) Exit the the level in the editor 3) Load the level in the editor again (I think it's enough to say "exit", "yes please" and then "load level") 4) Change all Motherships back to fish. And you should shouldnow have a playable level :D .

So true ! You have not understood what I am talking about. Have you been eating your computer ?

I was modifying a .lev, which does NOT have fancy stuff. You have missed the point of what I am talking about.

Yup, they really do !!! But why should I go through the lengthy process you described of changing UFOs to fishies - or was it vice versa - when if I simply had the .lev editor I wouldn't have to monkey around like that ??? Have you tried doing that ???

I still would like to have the .lev editor to play with.

The .lev editor came with the first version of RTW, so you would have to have that to be able to edit .lev levels without the trauma of rogue motherships. It's not available anymore since Deluxe and Platinum came out. I don't know if just putting the old .lev editor file in the platinum edition would work, it might overwrite the platinum one, but if it would work maybe someone has a working copy of Classic RTW so they could copy you the edit file. Then you'd be able to choose which editor you used to change the levels. Patrick should know whether it would work or not.

BUT, failing that you'll have to do what Mette suggested. You could just take all the fish out while you're editing the first time then motherships won't show up at all. :)

The editors are separate applications in the Platinum version. Platinum comes with two editors (two separate .exe files). One for LV5 - v2.0 and another for LV6 - v3.0. As the two are named uniquely, there is no overwriting or losing of editor capability. Though the .LV6 editor can edit all the versions, obviously the results can be a bit strange.

So I thought that .lev should be simply another separate editor. Anybody know whether the "classic" editor is a separate application ? And could I have a copy please ??? As it is no longer available and thus nonbuyable.....

Wonder what space fish look like ???

Before you start sending files out you should check with Patrick. Also, whether it would be viable would depend on what the file is called. When Deluxe came out it was a full game and separate from the Classic one, when Platinum came out it was just a patch to convert Deluxe into Platinum. That's why there are two edit files, one called wdledit.exe and one called wdleditp.exe. I would assume that the one in the classic version was also called wdledit.exe and so would overwrite the deluxe one in your folder. In addition it may not even work with the Platinum game. If you're going to give it a try I suggest you make copies of the other two edit files before you start, then you'll have a backup to go back to if it doesn't work. It may be just as simple as calling the new file wdleditc.exe for 'classic', you'd have to try it and see.

I still think it would be a good idea to check it out with Patrick first though.

How can I have missed the point. You can still have a LV6 with only classic elements in if you want to.

TheoX: do not send copyrighted material over the net. Although it is fine with me in this case that HollyBelle gets a v1.00 editor, in general this is really not acceptible.

MsHollyBelle: I see your point now... yes, there is a small bug when loading .lev files into v2 or v3 editors. Allthough I think you'll find that simply deleting the fish in a level (since you're editing it anyhow) might be easier than juggling different editor versions. The v1 editor is not tested with the Deluxe/Platinum Editions, and is no longer supported, so use of it is "at your own risk", as they say. I hope it works for your purposes.

Popo, Thank You for your input and concerns. I used to be a computer analyst for over 23 years. So no problem working with different versions. If I goof, I only have myself to blame, as we know the computer is always right. It only does what it was told to do by some #*@& human !

Patrick, Thank You for your go ahead. I do NOT intend to even try editing .LV5 and LV6 files with the .lev editor ! And we all know that Wonderland can handle all editor level files, magical as it is.

Theox, Thank You for offering to pm me the editor. With Patrick having said okay, please do zip it up and pm it. If it is too big, let me know and it can be done via email. It is a good day today !!!

Sorry Ms.HollyBelle, I was about to pm it to you a few hours ago, but it was too big, and then I had to rush out the door to go someplace, I do hope you understand

I see MS is emailing you a copy, so I'll leave that to him. :)
