2 skinless custom models

Post by LinkyNStoof » Sun Jul 11, 2004 1:52 pm

I decided to take a break now and post the two models (taken from various places on the 'net) that I've gotten to a stage where I feel ready to post. One is the Statue of Liberty, and the other is a Halloween Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin.

They are both assigned as "model1" but of course you can change that as needed. There are no JPG (skin) files included because the models don't use skins. Both are sized to take up a single tile (1x1).

Though now much better than the green blob I shown earlier, the Statue of Liberty is still a bit blurrier than I'd like, but I give up after fiddling with the color and lighting settings for over an hour with little improvement (maybe it's the model itself, or the fact that I shrank it down a lot to make it fit well in Wonderland). If you have MilkShape or comparable program, feel free to try improve upon the models, they aren't mine anyway to begin with.

The pumpkin unfortunately has a problem due to the perspective from which you look at the Wonderland playing field. Namely, you're basically looking at the field from above at an angle. Now, the carvings on the pumpkin are at its sides, so as is, because of the angle you're looking at it, you couldn't see the mouth very well (in the same way how you see more of a box's top than its sides in Wonderland). I fixed this by tilting up the pumpkin so that it's basically at an angle from the ground. This allows you to see the whole face, but you do notice its slight tilt as you walk around. Oh well.

I also include a screenshot of what they look like on my computer. Enjoy!

They look absolutely brilliant. The pumpkin's really cute. :D

I'm downloading them now, I'll let you know what they look like on my pc in a while.

Thanks.

PS. Who's gonna make the level to go with them, 'Stinky goes to New York on Halloween'.

Yep, they look brilliant on my pc too. 8)

Have you bought Milkshape? How much does it cost?

I have seen another one that makes .3ds files for $99 (about £60).

I downloaded a freeware one and it makes brilliant 3D models but I can't save them as a .3ds file so I can't use them in RTW.

This is so much fun................NOT!

Another problem. When I unzip the files I get an icon that is named Model1.3ds. Windows says it can't open the file. (I tried changing it to just model1, but that won't work either.)

In the Carshow folder there are the 4 files that have the 3ds extension (that I can't open) but there are also 4 .jpg files. (That I can open.)

What am I missing?

The .3ds file is the file for the model itself, the .jpg file is the file for the skin (the picture on the model).

Linky's models don't need skins so there are no .jpg files. You don't need to open the .3ds files, just put them in a folder in Custom Models just like the custom houses. Then when you put the appropriate name in the editor it will replace model1 icon with the .3ds model.

You won't be able to open a .3ds file unless you have a 3D modelling programme like Milkshape, but that doesn't stop you from using them in RTW just like the cars.

Well as I mentioned in another post, I'm only using the demo version of Milkshape for now, and I'm not really sure if I'm ever going to buy it (I don't remember how much it costs). I just don't think I'm really artistic enough to model anything myself, and while Milkshape's still reasonably useful for manipulating models you get off the Internet, for that sort of thing it's still a little clunky to use.

Milkshape can import from a number of file formats though, so maybe we can still make use of your freeware program. Just tell me what file extension the 3D models your program makes have, and I'll check and see if Milkshape can handle them. If so, I'm more than happy to try to convert whatever models you have from your program.

It makes .3DC files - the program is 3D Canvas.

I haven't made any models, just messed around with some shapes. I was hoping to get them off the net like you and adjust them to use in Wonderland, but it doesn't import .3ds files either.

I got the house skins off the net along with the .3ds files for the buildings but I couldn't use the .3ds files so I adapted the .jpg files to cover the houses instead, but they would look better as they were intended.

I've brought this post to the top because I've taken a liberty with LinkyNStoof's pumkin. I've edited it and made one that looks lit up and also one the has the dead spot behind it so that a torch can be put inside it or a coin or something.

I'm posting the entire folder with the original in it too so it will overwrite the other one.

Model1 is the original, model2 is the one with the dead spot behind and model3 is the the lit one in the normal place. See pic below.

I hope you don't mind LNS.

Not at all! They look awesome! And perfect timing too, my pumpkin seems to be getting quite popular lately.

In fact, I'll try to see if I can incorporate one of your versions of the pumpkin into the level that you abandoned and I promised to complete. [cranks brain......]
