Does anyone know what the difference is between a square button and a diamond button with a cross through it?
They seem to do the same thing.

The diamond lined button is a multiple use button, with a number of them. It works in a way that when you hit on one of them, It acts like a square button, doing what it needs to do. However, unlike square buttons, all other diamond cross buttons can be used to undo what the first one did.
Hope this helps

Diamond cross buttons are 1-use diamond buttons to clarify Loof101's post.
