Searching for old levels

Post by wonderlandlover » Thu Jun 21, 2007 2:22 pm

Hello! I have a suggestion to make, that may make it easier when downloading players' older levels, (of course, you can get them all from Mette's site :D ).

Since many of us use our username and level # for saving files, it's easier to see what levels we are missing for players. I have periodically gone through the forums to get old levels I'm missing, and unless I know the "name" of the level, you pretty much have to search through all the player's posts to find the ones your missing. If we could somehow put the file name in the text of our posts, (the search function doesn't seem to pull it off the attachment), then we could just put the file name in the search box, i.e. "kiki50", and hopefully that level would pop up.

I suppose you could just download old levels from Mette's site, but I am afraid of overwriting files I've solved. :D

Any thoughts or comments?

You can't overwrite solved files.
Even if you delete the file and then return it back it will return with your score.
However, if the two levelfiles are different, be careful.
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

Are you absolutely positive? Seems to me I've had files come up unsolved, that I have solved before. I just put all of Kiki's levels in one folder, and some overwrote (because I had duplicates in a different folder), and I had to resolve.

I hope I remember :? If I don't Lisa, kick my butt into touch (is that the right US expression?)

Not sure if this is something anyone would be interested in doing but....what I do is every month or so when I have a long list of completed levels I move those to a folder I have named "Done".

The problem with this is that when I download one that is in the Done folder I don't know it's done, because I'm too lazy to look hehehe. In other words I'll go ahead and download it to my usual custom levels "Users" folder and then I only know that it's actually a done one when I go to start the level because it's in the list with a score.

I have the experience mentioned above....if it's done my score and star will show up. Then I have that same file in two folders and I have to go back and delete it out of the "Users" folder because it's done and in the done folder. But it's only a few seconds before I realize that it's done and really it's no big deal to have those level files in two places unless you have very limited space on your computer. Or, if your an organization freak like me and like to have everything exactly where it's supposed to be with no duplicates hehehe

BUT (boy this is getting long winded) the level file name in the text of the post sure would help with the search engine that this site uses.

You guys are too funny! Lillie, I think maybe the saying is "kick your butt into shape"! :D Of course, I'd never do such a thing, but it was funny reading your "translation" of it!

Rescuefire: I like organization, too, and what I've done in the past is create new folders every couple of months, with subfolders of all the players levels. But some players are so prolific :D , and I have many levels from older folders I haven't done. So, I thought I would put all of one player's levels in one folder, so when I'm in the game, I can see which I've done, without going through all the those folders.

But, boy, does it take awhile to get to the end of 500 or more levels!! :D

wonderlandlover, No kiddin'!!!

I used to keep them by "Done" "To do" seperated by creator and then just the open "Users" folder. It just got to be too much moving files and such and I'd rather spend my time playing or doing something in real life LOL!

But I think I'm going to go back to some of that same type cuz I too am trying to catch up on many of Lizzies, Cats, Lillies, Kikis, Mark and Bob's levels. I love that there are so many challenges though.

But still going back to the original suggestion...GREAT IDEA... Lillie has done it already on her newest level so I tried searching for it before I even downloaded it and that sure did work slick!

Another organizer here. I do what you used to do, Rescue. I organized the files by user to do and user done. See below. I really like that most of the level makers number their levels. This helps to know if you are missing any, it also gives you some idea of when the level was posted. It is also easier to find a particular level. In addition, you can make sub-folders such as 1-99, 100-199, etc., that way you don't have to got through a looonnnnngggg list.

There must be some organization gene that we all have. I still think it's one of the reasons we all love Wonderland so much...there this "Gotta get it all cleaned up" thing going on hehehehe

I have a To Do folder that I download all levels into. When I've completed it, I move it into the By User's folder. Then I know that anything in the To Do folder needs to be To Done and anything in the user's folder is done already.

Just my 2 cents. :D

Someone unorganised that would be me!
My CustomLevels folder is a big mess. I left the folders that are already there untouched and with exception of a couple of level packs that went into folders, I have everything in the main CustomLevels folder. And it all becomes painfully slow to load.

Yeah Muz, that's about when I started using the multiple folders. When it took more than an instant (cuz I'm really impatient) I decided to clean up that "CustomLevels" folder. It definitely makes the program load faster if you actually place those "done" or "completed" or whatever you want to call them in a different folder all together. Not even in the RTW main program folder.

I even have a folder name "yuck 3D" hehehe guess what goes in there?

I to have that 'organize' gene, my hubby hates it sometimes. I have 2 folders and split the user files up since there is so many of them. Played folder contains A-K, player2 folder L-Z. When I download from Mette's once a month those go into the user folder, when I'm done with someones levels they go into their respective player folder. If I download someone's before they get posted to Mette's site they go into the level folder unless I still have them in the user folder, then they go there.

Sometimes I'll go thru a player's folder and finish some I skipped and if I finish all of theirs I put the whole creater's folder in the done folder. About once a month or so I back up my monica.pla file onto a CD-RW, just in case. I'd sure hate to lose all my info on what I've finished.

Hope I haven't confused anyone. I hate 3-D also and if it looks interesting I will go into the editor and remove the 3-D. There is a lot of creative levels but with the 3-D you really don't notice.

My whole computer is organized just the way I like it. Hubby has his own pc so I don't have to worry about him fussing.

My my my! I love that there are other "freaks" out there like meeeeeee!

And yes monica brings up a good point, that .pla file is the one that remembers all yer schtuff. In other words that's the file that tells the game whether or not you've ever played a level.

Going way back up there to what Wonderlandlover was originally talking about here on this thread, your .pla file is the file you need in the right place and intact hehehe mine is "mom.pla" cuz all my games get player names of mom.....not sure why I started that. I guess cuz I'm the only "mom" that will be playing on my puter.

Just a comment on Lisa's original idea:

I think it's brilliant :D . I know it will help me out in the future. I sometimes miss a level by oversight and once I discover it, it's useually a great pain to find it. Bravo on a fantastic idea  :D :D :D .

It seems that there haven't really been any disagreements, so do you think I should post the suggestion in the Puzzle/Action forum? I don't know if everyone will see or read this thread. They might read it over on the other forum. Maybe Patrick can do an announcement?

Hmmm maybe send Patrick a suggestion? But then again I don't think it affects the forum much and that it may seem like a "requirement" if it comes from Patrick instead of a request.

Me thinks in the Level area, as a sticky maybe?
