When I was a kid we used to call those wotnots. You kept your ornaments or wotnots on them. I made one at school in woodwork (in 1967) and my mother had it in the kitchen to keep jars of herbs on.

I still have one of those in my bathroom. Holds my son's junk.
I bet you could make a cool shadow box like that too!
