So the right way to obtain that extra mushroom key is by going first to the Lazy Leaf Forest. (where you play the adventure 'Lazy Leaf')
There you have an Adventure called "Good Flower, Bad Flower". At the entrance Dreeny is standing. He asks you to play the Adventure first. After you finished it, talk to that stinker again. THEN he will give you 'a clue', green light, so Patooters gives you that extra mushroom key you were searching so hard. All you need to do then is return to the Market Place and pick up that key.
When you've got all shards, it's a bit faster of course.
