I didn't mean the 3 barrels near the red button, but rather the larger group down below. As far as I can see, you need the path clear if you're going to set up the second reflector to get that group out of the way. If the timers are both being activated by boxes, the box will block the path. No, what you are missing is not obvious at all: do not permanently activate the timers until you return to this area. First clear the area with the kabooms and the UFO and place the reflector where it will destroy the large bunch of kegs, then cross back carefully and activate the timers only after the kegs are destroyed.
Oh, my. I was indeed doing something dumb. Greediness is so often the problem. I was taking the upper coin on the bridge while I was in the timer room, thus eliminating the way to get back.
