There is another solution that is win win for everybody.

Browsers have the ability to block images. I use Firefox myself and just changed my options.

The first option allowed me to block all images except those from the originating site. I did that and on this page, only one sig showed up as did the pictures posted by Popo and Janet.

I then used the other option which was to block all images and those did not show up after that.

I looked at Internet Explorer. Under their options, under advanced/multimedia, you can uncheck "show pictures" and "animations". That removes all images from the browser. I must say though it doesn't do it as smoothly as Firefox. There is an x showing where the image was in IE.

The pages do load much faster when those options are taken.

I myself enjoy the various signatures that are on display. When I viewed the page with no sigs, it was dull and drab. I do have DSL so it isn't a problem to me. If I had dialup though I would be blocking images regularly because this eliminates much advertising that is prevalent throughout the internet.

When the user does want to see images, it just takes a few seconds to change the options and then refresh the page.

Avatars can be fun but I personally enjoy the sigs that the users have made or were made for them. They also will slow down the dialup users unless the user blocks images.

6kbs?? 6? kbs?? Six?!?

Mine's 46kbs and it's only tiny. I can't see much creativity with only 6kbs.

Yeah, yours is really big compared to most others, not sure why (oh, maybe the amount of animation frames and the colour bit depth?).

6 is tight - no problem for static pictures, but not much room for animations. Lisa's and Laura's right now would fit, Annie's is only 0.8k (but it is only text animation).

Ramonda's option is viable, too. As is just making a voluntary effort to keep signatures smaller (e.g. smaller pictures, or just picture OR lines text, not both). Again, no hard decision being made right now, I'm just bouncing ideas off of you guys'n'gals.

I like your avatar Patrick, you should keep it. :D :D

If we all make a concerted effort to keep them small we should be able to make a real difference to the page loading speeds. I'm going back to the drawing board. 8)

Lillie, you're funny  I think it's small enough now

I still like the avatar idea best (I have no idea what size should be allowed). I have no problem with the speed myself, but I do find it increasingly difficult to read the posts with all the new signatures in between the actual text. I'd hate to see the pictures/animations gone alltogether (even though Ramonda's suggestion is a good one), so if everybody could have an avatar, the pictures would still be there, but in a less disturbing way.

Thanks for the test anim, popo. So, yes, animated GIFs work fine.

Just a quick note while I have a clear display.

I would vote for the smaller avatars. Some of the current sigs are distracting when you are trying to read the posts. In addition I don't think we should limit this board to only people with DSL or cable. If I remember right, both Majic and Olgramma have dial-up. Is it possible that we don't see them much any more because of slow loading problems for them?

Another problem that I have noticed is some of the sites that people are linking to try to put third party cookies on your computer. My firewall alerts everytime this happens. I don't trust third party cookies - why would I want cookies from a site I haven't even visited. I've had problems with spyware before and don't want it again.

I would opt for the smaller sigs, a lot of work has been put into them for our pleasure and they certainly do brighten things up a lot.

Excellent bit of advice from Ramonda for those on dial up or people who just don't like the images.

The competition idea is a good one Patrick, certainly for those members who have a flair for this sort of thing. I wouldn't be one of them btw, my limitations are iron on transfers.

Gen, I'm glad you brought that up about Magic and Olgramma ~ not to mention Carolyn and a few others ~ as I've been wondering what happened to them.

Kazza, you are SO funny!! Thanks for the laugh!!

Just be sure if we go the avatar route that we have a little tutorial or a page showing how it should be done for us computer challenged people!!

Duh... just figured out that I can set the avatar sizes myself. So if we go this route we can collectively decide what appropriate limits would be (filesize and screensize).

Okay now... I am just getting around to reading this thread Patrick...Actually I'd say about a day or two ago I said to my mother (ohbehave) "what do ya wanna bet the sigs will be banned?" and what do you know I come home to see this very disturbing post....

Signatures/Animated signatures as lillie said show your personality more and make this forum so colorful..Wonderland is such a beautiful place with all the wonderful signatures!! I'm just putting my two cents in which probably doesnt mean much but I for one will be very upset if they are banned or it gets changed to avatars....

We all enjoy our sigs and it's so much fun seeing everybodys signatures and (no offence) to those of you who think they are distracting just read the posts and dont bother looking at the animations (not meant to sound mean)

So I vote to KEEP ANIMATED SIGS!!!!

ohbehave wrote:okkkkkkkkk.....why is it that everytime we try to do something fun in here, someone has to complain...i have never had a problem loading anything on my computer... since i am one of the offenders making sigs for people PATRICK, im sure you might be addressing this issue to me and shorty....we have spent an enormus amount of time making the sigs for people...we all get a lot of enjoyment out of them, and yes it is an extension of all of our personalitys...i have only seen a couple of big sigs, and they were not made by me...

i think we should be allowed to keep up with the sigs, as long as they arent to awfully big.. thats my two cents worth...
Pam, why do you have to take everything personally? This isn't about you or your sigs in particular, but about them in general. I don't think anyone has been complaining about what you've been doing, your sigs are really good, but just because you haven't had a problem loading anything doesn't mean that some people won't have trouble. Anyway, if avatars are allowed, people will still want your work. They will just need to fit the boundaries size wise. My sig, although it is small, is quite large in kbs, and it's the kbs that slow things down. It's not just sigs that slow things down anyway, it other pictures that have been posted, especially ones that haven't been resized to fit the page. That pets thread where you all posted pics of your cherished ones was impossible for me to read when I was on dial up, and that was well before sigs started.

EDIT.
Oops. Posting at the same time as Patrick.
Popo,

Oh oh oh oh..... Excuse me MY MOTHER does not think EVERYTHING is ABOUT HER or OUR SIGS which by the way I know for fact this post was made based upon... My mother does not take things personally which sadly you wouldnt know because you never talk to us or anything....

My mother is totally right.. Since day 1 that ohbehave and I joined the wonderland forum we have been picked on and disliked from the very begining when we have done nothing wrong AT ALL... I'm not quite sure "some" of you don't like us ,To be honest... I don't care anymore!! my mother and I love wonderland and look forward to playing all the wonderful levels and also joining in discussions and talking to the wonderful friends we have made on here...

I know that by me making this post that Patrick will probably be upset and alot will dislike me (more) but I can't just hold this in, I am as much a part of this forum as ANY OF YOU and I do have the right, every right to state my opinion... RIGHT????

Not like you care or anything but my mother and I have put countless hours making signatures for our friends and also building our wonderland animation/signature website... On top of all those hours we've spent we've also spent countless amounts of money on it as well (all together is/well be over $400.00 USD) and those that go to the website do/are allowed to "bandwith steal" or whatever it's called and It's just a shame that we've put in so much money not only for the website but for the animation programS and for what??? nothing i guess

As many of you may think/say "I'm a hot head" or whatever it is that you would like to call me.. I am real.. One of the most honest people and especially when something upsets/bothers me, I'm going to let you know!!!

So my take on all this... I don't think it's fair to take away our animated signatures because a couple people have complained??? To be honest, If this happens (no Pat, Not trying to guilt you) I'm not quite sure I'll be coming around wonderland much anymore...

I'm going to end this as most likely I've said way too much already but hey... If you want to be mad at me (my mom) or even dislike us for stating our opinions then so be it..

Patrick,
I apologize as my post in no way was meant to be taken as me being mean or anything of the sort... I'm not mad at you, You know that we all love you but just remember this forum is a fun a wonderful place to be and w/ the animations/animated sigs. it makes wonderland 100x more fun, beautyful and wonderful to be a part of....

I could make you a siggy if you want

Thank you everyone for reading my babbling on and I'm sorry that the sigs are "distracting you"... I love you all (well most of you) *hugs* from shorty
