Game Elements 8: On Land & Sea!>>>Bridge Models

Post by Robbie » Mon Jul 04, 2005 12:59 am

Hey Pauline - just carrying over some thoughts from the previous thread…

I tried using the wavy sea thing underneath the transparent water of Pats but it really doesn't show up at all. I should reload that model & see how it looks without the water - use empty space instead…

The following screenshot uses a 4x4 model set at [x=0,y=1.9,z=0] - water y range goes from -2 at floor to -.2 at surface.

It looks OK set at y=-.25 as it avoids the unsightly walls rising from the water floor to the water surface but then becomes an issue if you want fish. Were there a transparency option with textures this would be great but until that option is included in any future release this is probably the best solution. A workaround would be to model a surface to the walls & texture them appropriately though this might be a little more timeconsuming & not practical for the regular level creator.

The other thing to note is that, ideally, any texture used would need to be seemless. This one here fits quite well as it is the water surface itself only enlarged 4 times which you would have already downloaded.

I also left the bottom right corner free so you could see the difference. On other level styles, it does make a more noticeable improvement.

Something more to play with. All files included here.

Robbie :D

PS oh & the other thing to consider on this initial model obviously is that any incorporation into levels needs to consider the deadspot currently at the centre…

PPS the AC3D file probably wasn't worth adding but it's here anyway - just a 4x4 rectangle located at 0,-1.9,0

Hmmn... couldn't add an additional attachment... here's the file...

oops! wrong extension.
included the wavy model Pauline for you to play with as well (and anyone else  )

Robbie :D

Don't know what anyone else thinks. Just relooking at the pic above & I wonder if a sea floor might wouldn't look better for that model. The texture looks fine (apart from not being able to see fish) for the model set at -.25 :?

Hey Robbie, I haven't had time to play with the first one yet.

This looks good. Do we get the Genie thrown in for free?

A sea bed picture would look cool. Or maybe sunken treasure. Davy Jones locker? Lots to think about.

Off to Mo's now, must rush, got a plane to catch. :D :D

Another thought. Inspired by Animal Crossing.

It probably needs some modification but here's a starter. It's not really practical for level creators due to the dead spot issue. If anyone wants to incorporate it into a level design it would really require the designer to give either me or one of the other willing modellers with a layout of the level & where you want the edging to go.

If it's useful all well & good. All files are included in the zip
- AC3D file
- 3ds file
- template
- test level

Just looking at it, do you think it might look better if the edging was a tad shorter??? Say 60% or so?

Will have to play with some different lengths.
Oh, and texturings will work best if the top edging matches up with the flat surface.

Robbie - that is sooooooooooo cool 8) 8) 8)

I love it! I would love to use it in a level. Maybe if Poopsie gets time she can show me how  Lillie = Thickie when it comes to modelling!

Excellent work Robbie - it is so appreciated you know. Poops helped me with your corner arch - she turned it into a Walt Disney sign for one of my levels recently - it looked brilliant! :D :D :D

Thanks again and I hope all your family are well :P

Personally, I think they would look better if they were longer, almost down to the bottom of the water. Like in the pictures from Animal Crossing. At the moment the islands look like they are floating cos the walls are the same as the floor, having them longer might make them look like real islands poking out of the water.

It would be nice if we could have bridges like that one too. 8)

It's in the works Pauline... say this time next week along with some modifications to this model. The other issue too of course is that it's not really going to look perfect because everything has straight edges whereas with something like AC above it looks more natural. The only real workaround would be to actually model landscapes - something I wouldn't mind trying out sometime.

I'm off with the family to Sydney tomorrow to see the outlaws  and our middle girl who's been on holidays down there for the last 2 months!

Will catch up when we get back Tuesday/Wednesday. Did you have a nice little break away?

A Bridge over Troubled Waters...

Rather timely I'd say considering the recent goings/carryings on
I've been working on these intermitantly for some time now & thought I better contribute even some preliminary stuff. I've included a AC3D screen shot of 4 models & the AC3D file for anyone wishing to take up the task in the meantime.

There's so many variations possible & other options... included here are bridge options for a bridge over 1 & 2 lengths of water with a couple of different side pieces. The lower arch I've brought down so that when placing an ordinary floor tile down underneath the bridge model, it won't be visible... (visable... sorry, don't have my dictionary on hand... I should know this but I'm tired... don't know why  ). It's not a big stretch to lengthen or even widen the bridge models and templates are easy enough to put together. Finding the time to do all that's a little beyond me this week.

If anyone has a burning passion to use a bridge model, let me know what you'd like & I'll do up something for you along with the necessary template for skinning your bridge.

Until next time... whenever that may be... probably safer than making my usual promises...

Brilliant Robbie. I think you're in the wrong job you know. You should be doing this full time. :D :D

I'll be having a play with this later today. 8)

I've been looking at these Robbie. Can you see the red crosses and the aqua lines around the shapes? The red crosses are where there are overlapping vertices and the aqua lines show where there are faces without any vertices. I tried optimising the vertices and surfaces and it removed 112 surfaces, but then when I clicked on one sided some faces disappeared.

I don't know if you could put the missing vertices in so that those surfaces have the required amount. Don't know if it will matter when they get textured. I never thought to check if all the normals were the right way round. Am I being picky? I'll try reversing the normals on those surfaces that disappeared and see if it helps. :? :)

Hmmn... :?

Glad you liked them Pauline & thanks for the low down on the errors. This is where my inexperience really comes into its own.

The extra surfaces I can handle, though I have no idea where they came from. I've got a fairly good handle on getting the normals the right way around but I'm completely clueless on why there are missing vertices and if there are as you say, why do the surfaces appear visible  ???

Seeing as I've made these models as simple as possible, I might be better off just creating the offending models from scratch by placing vertices along the same coordinates, create surface/extrude etc etc...

Let me know how you go as well.

Hi Loof101,

I think Popo and Robbie are still working on it. It's not done yet.
Patience is a virtue

I'm looking forward to the end result as well

Hi Anthony,

Sorry, it's sitting in my to do list. While the models you see are done, I haven't turned them into .3ds files or made templates for them yet. If there's any bridge you'd like a completed model for (with a template to decorate it) either send me a PM or post a request here.

Sorry I can't be of any help at all right now. Can't get the models working properly in the game. If I can't get it sorted out it could be the end of my modelling.
