THE WORLD CUP!

Post by Lillie »

As many of you know I am a big football fan. I just thought I would open a thread to discuss all things "World Cup" for those that may be interested :D

Lutzy and Luc - many congrats to Germany for being the hosts this year - I am sure it will be fantastic. Your country has no doubt been taken over by many different nationalities - I hope that makes for a fantastic atmoshere :D

Germany opens the competition tonight with the first game against Costa Rica. Good luck Germany and I hope you win! We can't have the host country losing their first game :?

I would just like to wish all the other countries participating well and hope there are some fantastic games to look forward to :D

COME ON ENGLAND!

The World Cup ? .. Is that something to do with sport ? .. It's never that game with 22 fellas and a ball to kick around is it ?

ok .. I might watch the opening ceremony but I'm not guaranteeing a full 90 minute stint in front of the telly (doubt very much The Wife will be allowed in the room anyway in case I cough, sneeze, walk within 5 yards of the TV screen or breath  )

Lutz, Luc and other German forumites - I have seen some footage on the news and it looks a beautiful place. I'm sure you're very excited and .. ditto .. Good Luck Germany with the game !!
Enjoy it everyone .. and commiserations of course to all those poor souls who won't set eyes on the remote control for the next 3 weeks

Kazza :) :)

Thank you Kaz and Lillie! :D

I don't think our team will have too many problems with Costa Rica (and the whole group), maybe they will even leave their group as winner   . But I doubt they'll get very far...

This time, I'm also in favour for Australia. I still can't belive they're practising in my tiny hometown Oehringen! 8)

But also good luck to every other country! :D

    OMG Kazza that's how my hubby acts when ANY sporting event is on TV, I swear if they made "paint drying" into a competition hubby would be watching with great intensity.

Enjoy the event to those of you with interest. (I can't say I have much if any interest in many sports  )

Maybe not the fans themselves are only British, but the england team for some strange reason has only british people?? Don't know really!
But British surely does not equal english, Kaz.
Rest in peace, Kym. I hardly knew ya.
Rest in peace, Marinus. A bright star, you were ahead of me on my own tracks of thought. I miss you.

Picture this:

It's sunday morning & I roll over to peek at the clock.... OMG IT'S 9:00 AM   How did I ever sleep so late, :?: :?: Where's Emily, she surely can't still be asleep, she's ALWAYS waking me...."I'm hungry mommy, can I have Cheez-It's for breakfast?" I figure hubby, had awoke much earlier & is off fishing for the morning, so his absents isn't alarming.

I scuffle out into the family room ..... there they are...... hubby & Emily snuggled together eating Popcorn, watching .... yep, you guessed it The World Cup

BTW: Emily, NEVER gets Cheez-It's for breakfast, or Popcorn for that matter

It is indeed a fantastic atmosphere and I hope all our guests enjoy their time in Germany.
Because there aren't enough tickets for all supporters to visit the games at the soccer stadiums we have a lot of public viewing areas in the major cities with huge tv-screens where you can view all the games, have some food and some drinks and a lot of fun with people from all over the world :D
I liked it so much I nearly had any time to play Wonderland  Just downloaded all the levels from thursday on...

Laura - you are funny! And what a treat to sleep in till 9am. People with young children will understand that this is indeedy a rarity and a luxury

Glad you are enjoying the atmosphere Lutzy - I bet the beer cellars are chock a block with people having fun. I hope you have a great few weeks drinking with your friends and making new ones along the way! Stan and I wish we could have come over (pesky kids   ) :D

Germany, Holland and England all won their first games - well done :D

Rosie, I love the orange kit, especially on those bronzed hunks  Edgar Davids played for my team here in London last season - he's great 8)

The USA play today - good luck :D

So we're sitting at dinner tonight and niether my hubby nor I are sports people. But still I ask him (who has has 3 hours sleep in 48 hours) "Trivia Question: In what country is the World Cup being held this year?

To which my brain dead hubby says: "Africa."

"Africa is not a country."

"I know that. But I decided to choose a place where there are no oceans and obvously couldn't hold a boat race."

Me thinks he needs more sleep.

Germany is the first team to win 2 games :D
(But it's also the first which has played two games already  )
As far as I have seen the games Spain and Argentinia are doing very well.
The US-boys lost against Czechia 0-3 :? Don't think they make it to the next round because their next opponent will be Italy on saturday

Well done to Germany (at least if you win your group and we win ours, we won't have to play you next round  ).

England play their second game this evening against Trinidad & Tobago at 5pm BST - I'm so nervous I can't eat today :?

Here is a link to the tables and standings so far: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... efault.stm

Thanks Lutzy - BIG congrats to Germany too :D I think you look the best team by miles so far!

Sorry to Holland - what a match last night

I really don't think we have deserved to get this far :( The whole England team are playing like a bunch of worn out old men. Surely it can't be that hot over there? The German team do not seem to be affected by the heat :? If we don't raise our game in the next round - I think we can safely say "Auf Weidersein to the World Cup" (sorry can't spell that  )

Hope you have to say "Auf Wiedersehen" not before july, 9th.
Maybe it's an advantage for your team that some Portuguese players are not allowed to play because of their misbehaviour against Holland.

Sorry for you, Rose :( . But I don't think your mood depends on the wins and losses of the Oranje elftal :P
