problem with forum (read/unread) - Patrick, help me please

When I open up the forum, the index shows just fine where I have unread posts (usually in general discussion and custom levels deluxe). When I go to the general discussion, all topics are marked as read even though I haven't read them all. When I go back to the index, it looks like I have no unread posts anywhere. The same happens in the other forums as well.

Does anyone know what causes this? Am I doing something wrong? Is it the forum acting weird? :? :? :? I haven't changed any of my settings so I'm rather stumped by this.

Any help as how to fix this will be greatly appreciated. :D

Hi Mette,

This has been happening to me for months now, it's very frustrating isn't it?
Now I know it's not me getting forgetful in my old age, thank you for that. :D

Same thing happens to me, I'm glad I'm not alone
I usually end up reading the same posts twice
Another problem I have is the "Users Browsing this forum" part , it rarely shows anyone else on here, but I know there is because we're either sending each other pm's or posting "replies" at the same time like now, I know SharonM and Auntie Mo are logged on but my field is blank

Hi everyone,

I am gald this topic came up. Because yesterday I had posted a question and it didn't show as a new post it looked as if it had already been viewed and I thought that was a bit strange.

I am also expriencing the same problem Laura N. I had said to Cat before that I guess I am the only person that is on the Forum during the day because I always seem to be the only one here. But I see people posting topics and reply but dont see them on. :?

Soluvable and Laura, in user progile there is a box that lets you set to let people know whether you are on or not. I fluctuate sometimes, I have it checked as on and sometimes not. Just depends on my mood. And also if I remember to go back and change it. :D  :D

I like to travel incognito also - after all, that purple hat's a dead give away if you could see me

I might have solved the read/unread problem.

I read this thread and then hit my "back" button: the thread still showed as a new one - then I read it again, and clicked on the "general discussion" link at the top of the page: the thread was no longer new.

Maybe that's the solution. It isn't anything I've really paid much attention to. I usually just go by the title, or placement on the page, hence I miss a few - but that's OK, 'cos us Ramblers suffer from tired fingers and flattened finger tips. I can afford to miss some

A very good guess Ann, but I never use the back button when I've read a post. I discovered a while back that it would mess up the read/unread markings and since then I allways click on general discussion (or whichtever forum I'm currently in) link.

Besides the problem occures before I read anything. I open the forum, see the unread flags, go to general discussion (for instance) and no posts are marked as unread. Strange indeed.... :?

The weirdest thing is that....between my last post and now, nothing has changed on my computer, but the read/unread markings are back in order :?

Strange things happen in Wonderland......

Really don't know what could be causing this - I do know that using the back button is a big nono and messes up the "time stamps" that each thread gets. But since you're not using it, I'm at a loss.

Mette, I've been living with this for a long time. It can be very annoying but what else can we do?

I have had my machine crash and when returning to the forum it seems I've read everything. :? Maybe we have little gremlins living in our machines.

Another thing has been happening for ages now, I don't get a pop up when a new message arrives even though this facility is enabled.

Oh well, we don't live in a perfect world.

My machine doesn't need to crash for that to happen. Everytime I leave the forum everything is automaticly marked as read. It has allways been like that for me, so I thought it was normal. :o

As for gremlins in my machine.... I often have a very big gremlin sitting in front of the computer (B's username is a combination af DK for Denmark and giz, short for gizmo, the cutest gremlin of all)

I agree the read/unread thing is annoying, but I can learn to live with it  :)

No, you just have to follow certain rules:
  • Don't feed him after midnight
    Don't expose him to water
    Forgotten the third
But I'm sure, Mette wil know how to handle him

Yea, that part is normal. When you visit the forum, all threads get a "visited this time" stamp. The forum only knows when you were last here (and assumes that any threads are read after about twenty minutes or so, even if you didn't read them all).

Hello everybody,

I had/have the same problem and I found out that everytime I clean my history in internet explorer the read/unread signs are gone and everything lookes like read or unread. Maybe that is the sulotion.
