Wonderland =/= Fire Island Theory (SPOILERS (MOFI))

Post by Qloof234 » Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:31 am

I'm not sure where else I could post this (I was thinking in the silly ideas topic, but theories usually aren't silly in that sense), so I thought General Discussion would work.

Okay, this theory is based off of multiple things, mainly from Mysteries of Fire Island.

Quite a few of the dialogs where the Stinkers are talking about finding a way home, they nearly always say that they need to find a way back to Wonderland (instead of finding a way home), which suggests that they're leaving Fire Island officialy out of Wonderland geography - Where my theory comes in.

Fire Island is not an official part of Wonderland, despite being close to it.

The same could apply for other Islands in the game (Sundog Island), which raises the question - When Wonderland was affected by the Void (Wonderland Adventures 1), would Fire Island and other islands nearby be at risk from the Void, or would they be safe?

Also, for RTW logic - Would a Rainbow Coin on Fire Island, or another island, be counted as outside of Wonderland?

I can't remember if Secret Worlds says anything about this on its map.

SPOILERS NOW
The same dialogs that seem to disqualify Fire Island as part of Wonderland also come from Kaboom!s
That seems to suggest that by official Wonderland geography states that Fire Island and Sundog Island and all other islands out that far are NOT officially counted as part of Wonderland, despite being in the same world.

Example quotes from MoFI that seem to hint at Fire Island not being part of Wonderland:
"Can you help us return to Wonderland?" - Selectable answer (Chief BIGBANG!)

"Until the storm has passed, traveling back to Wonderland will be completely impossible." - Chief BIGBANG! (selecting above answer)

"So are you coming back to Wonderland?" - Selectable answer (Chief BIGBANG!)

"You know, another ship sailed from Wonderland to Fire Island not long ago." - Captain (at makeshift camp)

"With the Home Glyph, we will finally be able to go back to Wonderland!" - Oondy (At The End Of It All)

"WELCOME BACK TO WONDERLAND!" - Mayor Scarredy (At The End Of It All)

"Everybody's coming back from Fire Island!" - Various Stinkers (At The End Of It All)

"The Ice Trolls have followed you back to Wonderland!" - Morklin (At The End Of It All)
However, despite all the quotes that point at Fire Island not being part of Wonderland, often (during end sequences), they appear to be refered to as just Wonderland.

What do you guys think?

Which could also mean that Fire Island IS part of Wonderland, but the Stinkers (along with some other races in Wonderland) refer to it as its own seperate place.

Well, "Wonderland" is just a name, and I think it is just a question of definition and usage as to what it means in any particular case. As in, there is no absolute meaning of what Wonderland is, and the meaning in a particular instance is entirely a matter of what the character speaking uses that name to refer to - which is generally obvious from context.

Wonderland does indeed seem to usually refer to the main land area in MoFI; in previous games, I don't think the issue has really come up at all, but I would guess that Wonderland is there used to refer to the whole world. Similarly, I suspect that the Void would have threatened Fire Island and Sundog Island also.

I suppose you could think of it as being a bit like our use of the name "America" - sometimes it refers to the continents of North America and South America, but sometimes it refers to the United States.

I think there is just Wonderland itself. It keeps building on. Example, after you have beaten WA 1, Morklin said the Thwarts have gone to help other Wonderlanders, which mean they are now living in Wonderland, which also means that their homeland is now part of Wonderland. This can also fit in with the Ice Trolls because of what Qloof said in his list of quotes. (The last hidden one.) I haven't seen the ending myself so I don't know if its a good thing. It most likely will be.

Have you ever noticed that in WA there is a stinker who talks about the rainbow coins and WSW? And in WA:MOFI there is Mayor Scarrdy talking about four Stinkers and rainbow coins and WA 1?

Maybe the usage is like New York, New York. :)

That's probably one of the best ways to put it in comparison to our world, and now that I think about it, I think that'd probably be how it works; Fire Island is part of Wonderland, except isn't always referred to like so.

Wasn't The Void refered to as part of Wonderland in Secret Worlds? If it wasn't, then that's my fault for thinking so seeing as I haven't played that part of WSW in forever.

And yes, the Rainbow Coins and WSW in WA is a nice reference, as is Scarredy talking about the original heroes, the Rainbow Coins, and the Void from WA.

"Wonderland, Wonderland"?

In all honesty though, I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. Probably has to do with the fact that we don't study geography in French immersion.

I have a feeling that Fire Island and many places like the Void may not be part of Wonderland. Although being mentioned in WSW, I think that it cold just be part of the other worlds (apart from the secret worlds). The main part of Wonderland is just the area near Wondertown.
