I think the administrator has the possibility to:
- change someone's username, and/or
- let users change their own username.
So if your not happy with your username, you always can ask Patrick. However, if users have the possibility to change their own usernames, and you would be on Monday ^_^, on Tuesday >###<, on Wednesday 1000%, and on Thursday Sinterklaas, it would be pretty messy, isn't it?

I told you before somewhere an admin on another forum changed his name from aaaaajon to aaaaajom in order to evade a really random rule on a forum game.
It was on a PBsandwich2 forum or whatever.
i should change my signature to be rude to people who hate pictures of valves

No, actually I meant, if users can change their own username, there would be maybe someone who changed it everyday. MS has to change the setting only once.

Name change has to be done manually by an administrator on vB/phpBB.
Currently at 3.studIo forums we allow a name change per 6 monthes.

The other possibility is as Blast and I said, that the admin switch on the option: Allow users to change their username.
I see what you mean. (Yes, I haven't used phpBB2 for years )
On IPB you could limit the users to change their display name (is separated from login name) x times per a certain time. Maybe phpBB2 could do the same?
You mean: It's sort of programming-language, so you can change the software?
Actually I don't know anything about it. Years ago I tried some programming with Basic, Pascal and C++, but I forgot most of it, and although I know how to change things in the admin-panel, I have no idea how to change the software.
